Ramirez said he worked for John Deere as a union member for nearly 30 years and is new to the Tea Party. He joined the party's gathering with about 60 others at the bottom of the statehouse steps. Ramirez believes his fellow union members need to realize it is time to make do with less for the good of the country. He said, "Absolutely. All of are going to have go give up."

At their rally, the state's unions delivered a far more organized front with a sound system set up for a list of speakers before the crowd. They cheered for each other and jeered the tea partiers downstairs.
One man holding a union banner screamed, "Three reasons to be a Republican: either you're real rich, you are real religious, or you are real stupid. Which are you?"It is fear that brought Becky Douglas, of Belle Plaine, to the rally. She said her son is a corrections officer. She said, "Think something has to be done to stop what they're about to do in his country. Not good."
Douglas joined more than 1,000 union members and supporters, many of them bussed in from other parts of the state. Douglas doesn't think the government should turn against the workers who serve its people. She said, "They want to take it away from the working man. I don't think so."
