"Plutocracy now: what Wisconsin is really about"
by Kevin Drum at Mother Jones

"Second, American politicians don't care much about voters with moderate incomes."

"How did we get here? In the past, after all, liberal politicians did make it their business to advocate for the working and middle classes, and they worked that advocacy through the Democratic Party. But they largely stopped doing this in the '70s, leaving the interests of corporations and the wealthy nearly unopposed. The story of how this happened is the key to understanding why the Obama era lasted less than two years."

He tells a story, not just how the master's of money took over, but how the left abandoned the working class and vice versa. The student left cared more about social issues than about economic ones, and the AFL-CIO refused to endorse McGovern in spite of his record of supporting worker issues.

1. McGovern was not the saint you think he is.

3. I was ten years old when I first heard of McGovern
I was walking home from school and saw some "McGovern for President" yard signs on the corner.

Later I saw him on TV saying that the space program was a waste of money.

I considered that to be the worst sort of heresy, and just downright stupidity.

So I was never a huge McGovern fan, even though he was Senator of my home state.

Still, I am fairly sure he'd have been a better President than Nixon.
