You may have missed the brief interview yesterday where he was carrying an umbrella and said he wanted to visit his 'supporters' in the square, but couldn't go because it was raining.

in this speech, Gaddafi seems to be addressing an audience, but notice that he is wearing reflective glasses. The cameraman is the only one visible in the reflection.

Ghadaffi keeps it in its damaged state as a reminder of some kind. I believe he's given talks in that location before.

4. K&R-I remember when this guy took power some people here thought it was a great thing...
he was a "revolutionary", after all...but he soon revealed himself to be very crazy and a threat to his own people as well as others.

His "speech" at the UN a year or so ago was equally nuts. He makes Palin sound competent.
I really hope the people succeed in driving him out very soon.

5. That's usually how it works.
People are fine with disenfranchising the minority, because it's the absolute extreme of the goal of most political factions. "Ha! Look what they did there!"

They love it when it happens to an opposing movement, but not when it happens to their own.

In my mind, the basis of human empathy is being able to put yourself in the position of another. If we all did that with autocratic rulers, then we'd see quickly how we wouldn't like it.

16. My recollection of Qaddafi goes back to the early 80's when he threatened to torpedo the QE2...
...and, of course, the "line of death" he drew from Benghazi to Tripoli and dared those to cross it. The US did... to bomb the shit out of Qaddafi.
