Wisconsin Governor takes 20-minute call from prankster posing as Koch brother
Just finished listening to it. I figured I should share, because this needs to get out there pronto:

http://www.buffalobeast.com/?p=5045

The two videos down the page are the 1st and 2nd half a the 20-minute(!) long phone call between Gov. Walker and "David Koch", actually Ian Murphy of the ever-offensive Beast. The call is very recent, probably from yesterday, as evidenced by its subject matter. When "Koch" proposes "planting some troublemakers" among the Wisconsin protesters, Walker says "we thought about that". Not to mention that Walker agrees with "Koch" that Mika Brzezinski is "a real piece of ass." Enjoy!

180. If that really was the governor, he showed his true colors.
This is not about balancing the budget. This is about breaking the backs of laboring people -- reducing them all to things that can be starved, left naked and discarded if that's what the rich and powerful want.

This shows the cruelty of the right wing more than any other thing.

The remarks about Reagan's union busting tell the whole story. This is about male dominance -- not about doing the right thing.

The governor is a thug.

What sort of Christianity does he believe in? Jesus would be horrified at this man's attitude toward working people. Jesus' father was a humble carpenter as was Jesus.

The murderers of Jesus were the priests and governors. The disciples were, for the most part, humble fishermen, working people, the kinds of people who belong to unions. The governor needs to read the New Testament in his Bible a little more carefully.

What side would Jesus be on, Governor?

Shame on you, trying to take bread out of the mouths of your employees' children in order to put caviar in the mouths of the rich.

200. I disagree. This shows how ineffective Walker is as a governor for ALL of Wisconsin.
He seems to think he's in a war with his own constituency! If he hates the opposing political party in the state legislature that much, how will the people have confidence in its government? He admitted that he's not going to talk to the Democrats to work this out (compromise) & he won't give an inch to his state workers. He needs to go.

213. well, the one sentence of "Koch" saying they have a vested interest there, and Walker says, "thanks
a million" is interesting to say the least.

Also, saying he accepted the "Koch" offer to come out for a good time once he takes down the union, sure looks improper.

23. Read this article about Senator Tim Cullen!
http://gazettextra.com/news/2011/feb/22/cullen-sees-way-end-senators-hideout/

Cullen sees way to end senators' hideout

"Right now, everybody is solid. I don't think anybody wants to be the one person who provides the 20th vote," Cullen said. "But we are not oblivious to political opinion, and we shouldn't be oblivious to it. I think there's a shelf life to staying here. ...I didn't run for Senate to spend the rest of my life in Illinois."

Anyone happen to know what federal law is in this case?

It really doesn't matter for us though, because this was a tremendous public service. It's like a Wikileaks type of thing here. Too bad this can't be done more often, but if it was, they'd implement methods to protect themselves.

53. I thought about that, yes.
I wish someone could do just that.

But most us must rely on our ears. My ears told me that there were 2 channels to the recording--stereo.
Which I suppose is what a person would expect from a professional prankster siting in a studio.
The Koch voice is clearly speaking into a very high quality microphone that picks up a wide range of frequencies.
The Walker Voice seems to be very good quality for a telephone, but maybe governors have great quality telephones.

I don't know if I ever heard Koch's voice, I wouldn't recognize it at any rate.

Living in Wisconsin I've heard Walker many times, but never in such a relaxed way. The Walker voice sounds nasally which is typical of a white guy from this region of the country but it seems more nasally than Walker, the tone of the voice also seems somewhat deeper--that might be due to his being relaxed.

I don't know. The recording seems to be of very good quality, and hearing Walker over my cheap car radio and television may actually have given me a wrong impression of what his conversational voice sounds like.

My brain reminds me that sometimes when a thing is too good to be true, it isn't true.

55. He's using Skype, there's a bit of business about it in the article:
“I’m calling from the VOID—with the VOID, or whatever it’s called. You know, the Snype!”

In other words, he's using his computer to call Walker -- and to record the call.

Mother Jones seems to think it's real: http://motherjones.com/mojo/2011/02/scott-walker-koch-brother-crank-call-wisconsin

However, there's all kinds of wonderful ways to record phone calls, with or without a computer. I'm not saying the Beast fellow didn't use Skype, but I do think the Skype thing was said to keep the folks in Walker's office from clueing in on the gag.

I read the transcript. Is there anything in there that our side could really use? Other than MAYBE to cause him about 20 seconds' worth of embarrassment? What can we do with this? Seriously?

My husband says it proves some sort of inter-state collusion to violate federal union protections and that the Justice Department should be on it immediately. Is this really a possibility? Not that OUR Justice Department with the worthless useless Eric Holder at the helm, I don't think. What good has he been since he's been in office - somebody help me remember please?

169. I think yes, Wisconsin culture being what it is
puts a premium on fairness.

1) Having a Governor that will take calls from David Koch, but not the WI 14 will definitely be seen as unfair.

2) The link between Koch and Walker is made concrete--Wisconsinites will balk at a no-bid contract for the power plants knowing Walker is a paid puppet.

3) The notion that Walker is trying to build a political legacy (a la Reagan the PATCO buster) rather than doing what is needed for Wisconsin will be seen for the self-aggrandizing selfishness that it is. Wisconsinite will be mightily pissed off by that.

183. It could well be a prank. But in a prank, I would have expected Walker's
arguments to have been much more extreme. Pranksters usually can't resist exaggerating just a bit. Pranksters usually want to get caught.

We will soon find out -- because the governor will deny the call, and Cullen will set the record straight if this wasn't for real.

The part about walking up to Brzezinski in a restaurant sounded a bit over the top to me? Was the governor in the same city as Brzezinski at some point? Did he leave Madison during this period? That caused me to question the interview.

Some guy created a fake site that claimed to debunk global warming, and it used a lot of big words/scientific language and was heavily cross-referenced and sourced.

After the site went online, a bunch of RWers ran with the story, including Rush Limbaugh and a local guy here in CT.

The guy who burned Limbaugh called them on it and Rush was forced to apologize for leading his listeners to the site. I don't think the local guy ever apologized, though.

127. An open admission of union busting isn't important and useful?

When he's been claiming it's all to balance the budget?

Maybe that's not news to Democrats or liberal/progressives but to Independents and even some Republicans that's important. Even if they don't necessarily like unions, the duplicity of it will leave a bad taste in some mouths.

bit, this admission that he wants to literally crush the unions should help firm up their resolve--and maybe even get a lot mroe union protesters in from all over the country for solidarity and perhaps even a general strike. the admission that his purpose is really to crush unions is a very big deal, I think.

Also, he doesn't say the same thing in public and private, since in public he has pretended that his real goal is to balance the state budget.

57. This call was a legal recording and could be admissable.
I just looked up the law, and both originating state and the destination state have one party consent laws, meaning that only one party, the prankster in this case, needs to consent to the recording of the telephone conversation.

It's not a part of a pattern of abuse, so it wouldn't probably fall under the telephone harassment laws.

And there is a legitimate political purpose to inform the people of corruption in the government.

So it looks like an all around OK deal.

The governor openly admits in the call that he considered an illegal strategy to goad people into something illegal. Though, there is a lot of reasonable doubt in that, because rather than just say it on his own, he was himself goading into mentioning it, and he could use the defense that he really didn't do that, but was trying to kiss the ass of his friend.

But in the court of public opinion, this looks very bad.

Hopefully, it will spread like Kudzu.

70. The comments by Walker confirm that this is a national coordinated strategy by
Republican governors to bust unions. He criticizes Obama for his remarks about workers rights to organize, saying he should mind his own business because it is a Wisconsin problem, but then goes on to confirm that there is national effort by Republicans to destroy unions.

Walker is like a religious zealot who worships at the alter of corporate profits, and will "convert" everyone else by force if necessary.

...." So where'd they call him that he didn't have a receptionist or some other staff member pick up and screen the call? His house? His cell? I'm pretty sure both of those are unlisted and if the public had access to either I'm sure they'd have had to change it days ago. Did they call him at his office then? "

This is part of a comment on the video. Can anyone explain this?

126. Nevermind. Found my own answer @ HuffPo:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/02/23/scott-walker-buffalo-beast-phone-prank_n_827058.html

"Buffalo Beast Publisher Paul Fallon told The Huffington Post that the audio is "absolutely legit." That the call took place as described by the Beast has been confirmed by Walker spokesman Cullen Werwie.

"Basically what happened was, yesterday morning was watching television about this Wisconsin stuff and he saw a report where he saw Walker say he wasn't going to talk to anybody," Fallon said. "And he said, 'I bet he would talk to somebody if he had enough oomph behind him.'"

This all apparently went down Tuesday afternoon, hours before Walker made his "fireside chat." It took some doing: Murphy-as-Koch said he had several hoops to jump through before he was granted access to Walker, beginning with a receptionist, leading to the governor's executive assistant, and finally ending up with his chief of staff, Keith Gilkes."

Someone said upthread this was nothing. You can't possibly be serious. This is the Waterloo of the corporate effort to crush unions. If anything, this will make unions stronger than ever and the backlash to this is going to be huge. I can't WAIT to see this play out today! :D

125. Statement from Governor's office confirming legitimacy
>>UPDATE: Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker's office confirms that the recording of a call between the governor and an alt-weekly writer posing as David Koch, one of the billionaire GOP financier brothers, is real and that it is actually Walker on the recording. The governor's office has released a statement:

The Governor takes many calls everyday," Walkers spokesman, Cullen Werwie said in a statement. "Throughout this call the Governor maintained his appreciation for and commitment to civil discourse. He continued to say that the budget repair bill is about the budget. The phone call shows that the Governor says the same thing in private as he does in public and the lengths that others will go to disrupt the civil debate Wisconsin is having.>>

http://motherjones.com/mojo/2011/02/scott-walker-koch-brother-crank-call-wisconsin

What? The Governor mentions that he'd considered planting troublemakers to disrupt protests and agrees with Mika Brzezinski being "a real piece of ass" in public as well?!?

(edited to add) Sarah Palin was also once a victim of a prank call during the 2008 elections.

198. I'm glad it's true and I'm sad it's true, but
we need to expose these people for who they really are and who their friends (Koch Brothers) are. They have a plan and they are moving forward with it, we need to stop them at all costs. I don't care at this point what we have to do to expose these pathetic, Un American traitors to democracy, so long as we can stop their forward move to enrich themselves, place themselves in power and screw the rest of us and destroy this country all for power and money. How much do they want, need? What will stop their greed? I have sent these links to so many people, my wrists hurt. This must be seen by everyone so that they wake up and finally realize who the enemy really is. The Domestic Terrorists living among us, destroying us from within.
Why isn't Wall Street in Prison? Why aren't the Republicons being investigated for their dirty deeds and lies and corruption? Why aren't Beck and Limbaugh and the GOP FOX News Regulated to tell the truth and stop lying on the air to inflame and confuse their listeners who are mentally challenged and do not need to hear these lies day in and day out. What about laws that stop these fake grassroots organizations from forming, telling lies and fomenting hate? Free Speech My Ass. These people and their fake organizations have corrupted this nation and are killing our Democracy, destroying our jobs and pitting each of us against the other to keep us distracted while they complete their plan to own everything including us. Evil does persist and grow when good people do nothing.

Walker seems to be at war with his own constituency. Anyone who hates the opposing political party that much shouldn't be a public servant. There's no way Wisconsin's state government as a whole can effectively operate as a democracy, per this phone call.

He needs to resign or be impeached.

Sen. Tim Carpenter writes Gov. Walker!! "you have no business being in .. office.. should resign"

Governor Scott Walker
Wisconsin State Capitol

Dear Governor Walker,

I am informed that a tape recording has been released in which you apparently held an
extensive discussion with someone you believed to be your campaign supporter, David
Koch. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel states that the caller was actually a reporter,
pretending to be David Koch, and it has posted a transcript of the recording. It appears
that you admit the call occurred, and have not contested the authenticity of transcript.
David Koch is the billionaire businessman who reportedly contributed thousands to your
campaign and who the media claims is a key source of funding for shadowy political
groups that spend hundreds of thousands of dollars attacking your political adversaries in
our state.

At a historic moment in our State’s history, brought on by your refusal to compromise
with elected officials regarding the elimination of worker’s rights, you still refuse to talk
with Democratic legislators. However, you apparently have no problem taking a phone
call from “Mr. Koch” and to:

• Discuss your strategy to lay off public workers to seek partisan advantage to pass
your agenda;

• Discuss your plan to lure Democratic legislators to the Capitol on the pretext of
negotiation, but then state that you would never actually negotiate;

• Discuss your plan to use the pretext of negotiation to get a quorum for legislative
fiscal action that Republicans so far have not been able to do;

• Discuss that you considered the “planting” of paid troublemakers into the
peaceful protests at our Capitol; and to

• Give your enthusiastic acceptance to an offer from “Koch” to fly you out on a
vacation to show you a “good time” once you “crush these bastards.” Your
response was “That would be outstanding…” Given that Koch’s businesses could
reap vast rewards with the ‘no bid’ sale of the Wisconsin’s power plants that you
propose in your budget repair bill, this response is severely troubling.

Governor Walker, this tape would make Richard Nixon blush. If the recording and the
items discussed by you are indeed your plans, you have no business being in public office
in our State, and should resign.

Sincerely,
Tim Carpenter

CREW: WI Governor Violated State Law by Sending Troopers After Missing Legislator | CREW | Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington

Washington, D.C .- Today, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), a non-partisan government watchdog group, asked the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board to investigate whether Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker violated state law by sending the Wisconsin State Patrol (WSP) to the home of Democratic Senate Leader Matt Miller. CREW also submitted open records requests to the Office of the Governor, Office of the Senate Majority Leader and the WSP seeking records regarding the use of the troopers. Click here to read CREW’s letter to the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board. Click here to read the open records requests.

“Governor Walker has many tools at his disposal to fight the state’s public employees, but using troopers to track down a political opponent crosses the line,” said CREW Executive Director Melanie Sloan. Sloan continued, “The governor’s conduct is especially egregious in light of a Wisconsin law specifically barring troopers from taking part in any dispute between an employer and employee over wages, hours, labor, or working conditions -- the subject of the governor’s bill.”

CREW’s complaint alleges that by abusing his position as governor to send the WSP to Sen. Miller’s home, Gov. Walker obtained an unlawful benefit – the use of the troopers – in an effort to gain an advantage in his wage dispute with the state’s public employees. Further, CREW charges that Sen. Fitzgerald and WSP Superintendent Stephen Fitzgerald may have conspired with the governor to unlawfully send state troopers after Sen. Miller.

Notably, it was Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald who asked the governor to call on the WSP, aiming to send a message to Sen. Miller and his caucus. The WSP is headed by Superintendent Stephen Fitzgerald, father to both the majority leader and state Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald. Superintendent Fitzgerald took office on February 14, 2011, the same day the governor’s bill was introduced, and just three days before Sen. Miller asked Gov. Walker to call on the troopers for assistance.

“Superintendent Fitzgerald should be devoting his time to the WSP’s stated mission enforcing traffic laws, helping motorists in need, inspecting trucks, school buses and ambulances and assisting local law enforcement agencies with natural disasters and civil disturbances, not illegally intervening in disputes at his son’s behest,” said Ms. Sloan. “Would Sen. Fitzgerald have had the nerve to suggest the WSP get involved if his father wasn’t running the agency? And wouldn’t a more independent superintendent have refused the request?”

“As the country watches events unfold in Wisconsin, the state’s Government Accountability Board must act quickly and firmly to ensure all Americans that the abuse of law enforcement authority will not be tolerated and that even powerful political officials are not above the law.” said Ms. Sloan.

263. My biggest problem with this
isn't what was said. I agree it was wrong and possibly criminal so Walker should of course face charges IF he broke the law.

My biggest problem is that he obviously sold access to his office. He takes a call from a Koch brother, but you know if any of us here or even if a run of the mill loyal Republican voter called we would be told to pound sand. Walker should easily face charges of selling access to his office.

I think I figured it out when Walker mentioned the friendly Democrat who, although not a member of the club, had finally "made real money" in the private sector and had become more understanding of fucking working people over. The other epiphany was Walker talking about his working class allies, those with bitter but firm convictions that because they've been fucked over by parasites like Koch and Walker that everyone who works for a living should be fucked over too. Cosmically greedy billionaires and sociopathic opportunists I can understand. It's their credulous, working class supporters, willing to wage war against the own class and their own interests who frighten me most for the future of the country.

285. Remember when Palin thought she was speaking to the French
president, and she was flattered that he liked her video "Nailin' Palin," which she apparently had no clue about. She also sounded as giddy as a schoolgirl.

It ain't much of a game!

And, you're so easily punked! Why, you're as easily punked as any of the other ideologues like sistah Sarah and all those Hitler youths in Florida.

Damn.

303. I think the most important part
is where the caller asks him if he needs anything and Walker says that the lawmakers who support him will need something after the vote. It was as if he was asking the fake Koch for rewards.

309. That and the genius of doing it as one of the Koch brothers
we know of them - but many people who are not into politics don't - but now that name is out there. Walker won't take a call from elected Dems but he WILL take a call from fake billionaire who funds Republicans?

Walker should be impeached - he is trying to hurt workers while helping the rich - a typical Republican tactic for sure, but this openly - against the people of his own state? Impeach the bastard. Glad the Koch bros got the light shined on them hard too. Think they can buy a government - a country - and they just might if people aren't careful. Catering to these out of control billionaires is really getting to be a SERIOUS problem.

When will people learn, as flawed as the Dems are - that is NEVER an excuse to vote republican. They are like the mafia - but worse I think.

306. Ian Murphy = my hero
Whether or not there's anything actionable in Walker's comments, the whole conversation was the most revealing, telling commentary on the state of our political process I've ever heard. 20 minutes to summarize and exemplify everything that's gone wrong with this once-great country.

Beautiful work by Mr. Murphy. Give that man a prize.

314. Regarding the convo regarding the Democrat Tim Cullen;
in the recording Walker talks about how this Democrat 'that works with him':

well, he IS a Democrat,

but he's "Pragmatic".

i.e. willing to give up the U.S. citizens to kowtow to corporations,
as I've seen it

only somehow they leave "pragmatic" out of the transcript!

Interesting...

Awesome piece of work though, that dude has cahones!
