Woman turned away from three area hotels because she has a local address
Natomas woman objects to hotel exclusion policy

SACRAMENTO, CA - A Natomas woman who said she was turned away from three area hotels because she has a local address is upset at what she calls a policy of "discrimination."

The woman said she tried to rent a room at the Natomas Holiday Inn Express for a one night getaway for herself over the weekend.

"The young lady behind the desk said, "Oh, I'm sorry. We don't rent rooms to anyone from Sacramento," according to the woman, who's named Debbie, but did not want her last name used.

She was told that two nearby hotels, the Hampton Inn and Homewood Suites by Hilton, had the same policy.

1. So if you're escaping an abusive partner, you better have a car to get to the next town over.
Sheesh.

2. Or if you drank to much at a local bar
and want to sleep it off... SOL.

6. The 'address' excuse is bullshit, of course
The easiest way to make them look like morons is to have the mayor of Sacramento or the Governor book a room, and see how they apply their 'official' policy...

3. That illegal policy will last about another two days, if that.

4. That's just jaw-dropping to have as official policy...
Even in the old days, when excluding certain kinds of people a desk clerk was tactful enough to say there were "no vacancies" (wink-wink), or quote an exhorbitant rate per night...

I've very curious to see what the national parent companies have to say about this...At least this woman won't have any problem getting some legal representation...

5. I've heard of that in my area, too.

Evidently it's not uncommon.

I've been told one reason for the policy.

7. Is it because they think the person might be a prostitute, and have client(s) coming to the room? nt

12. Not exactly.

Evidently, someone local will rent a room, and before long things get of control with guests (underage kids, whatever) partying/drinking/fighting/whatever.

It's a relatively common policy around here, as far as I know. Maybe it's applied at certain times of the year, (graduation/summer/?) I really don't know.

11. Prostitution is the one thing that comes to mind.
Other possibilities are a rendezvous with a lover or a drug deal.

Still, that rule is just plain ridiculous.

There are many valid reasons for renting a hotel room even if you live in town. Such as, home renovation, fire, flood, too many visitors to fit in the house, romantic getaway, etc.

The woman should sue them.

18. Good point.
I don't know the CA laws, but it seems to me that they are rules established by the motels.

10. If it were my motel, the policy would be simple. Got the money? You got a room!

13. In my area, when my kids were in elementary school, renting a few rooms
at suite type hotels for a birthday sleep over was the "in" thing to do. The parents took a room adjacent to the kids' rooms. Each of my daughters went to at least one - and I never heard the parents having any problem reserving the rooms.

20. Exactly. Or their pipes burst, there was a fire in their house, electricity was out...etc.
Or hell, maybe they just needed a night away from the kids. What about a domestic fight or even separation/divorce?

There are a ton of reasons a person might need a room for a night or two in their own town. And I'm sure the people that wrote the policy always explain that away (to themselves) with, "Well, they can stay with family and friends." But sometimes, that's just not an option.

19. I wasn't aware that the economy was so good!
I guess these hotels have tons of people booking rooms, so they can be picky. Otherwise, if I were the manager, I'd be pretty pissed about turning away guests.
