NBC reporter Richard Engel says Libya is in open civil war. This is not like Egypt.
He sneaked into the country and was taken, by rebels, more than 100 miles into the countryside. Much of the military in that area has defected from the army and, still in uniform, and still fully armed, have joined the "rebels."

No link. This was a teevee report I just saw on MSNBC.

Amazing stuff.

3. Not At All Like Egypt, Sir
This one breaks down on tribal lines, which are geographic as well, so that divisions are not only between people, but areas.

The 'mercenaries' imported by Ghaddafi, though doubtless paid, will be from factions he supported in the past in the civil wars of Chad and the Sudan.

This will get very messy: if not ended in a week or two, it could go on for months. There was footage of shoulder-fire missiles being passed out to young men in tee-shirts, and once that sort of thing is out of the armories, it does not return....

4. Good to see you!
Yes, I saw that, too. The army deserters turned over their compounds to the rebels. In uniform, they openly joined with the rebels.

The only way this will end quickly is if Ghaddafi leaves. If he holds on, the fighting will last a long while and could even spread to neighboring countries.

5. Engel has been doing good work
He deserves recognition for this as well as for his reporting from Egypt a couple of weeks back.

He's also got an impressive past record of reporting on Afghanistan.

6. It's in some ways similar to the anti-Communist uprising in Romania in 1989
