FOX LIES: Airs "Backward" Graphic To Falsely Claim Most Americans Favor Ending Collective Bargaining
Edited on Wed Feb-23-11 09:58 AM by kpete
On Fox & Friends, co-host Brian Kilmeade claimed, along with an on-screen graphic, that a recent USA Today/Gallup poll found that "61 percent" of Americans are in favor of taking away collective barganing rights from public unions. In fact, Fox aired the results of the poll completely backward: the Gallup poll found that 61 percent of Americans are opposed to taking away collective bargaining rights.

While talking to Democratic strategist Robert Zimmerman, Kilmeade discussed the results of a recent USA Today/Gallup poll to falsely claim that "61 percent" of those polled are "in favor of taking away." From the broadcast:

KILMEADE: Wow. But is President Obama out of step with history? Joining us now to debate it, knock it around just a little bit, Democratic strategist Robert Zimmerman and Jim Glassman, Director of the Bush Center and author of the book Safety Net. First things first, Robert, do you think the president is taking a big risk here?

ZIMMERMAN: Not at all. I think he's showing respect for history and respect for our history of supporting the rights and safety of workers, but more than that, he's speaking for the mainstream of our country and the main stream of Republican governors that are not siding with Governor Walker in his efforts to overturn right to work -- collective bargaining.

KILMEADE: I think Gallup, a relatively mainstream poll, has a differing view. And here is the question that was posed, should you take away--will you favor or are you in disfavor of taking away collective bargaining when it comes to salaries for government workers? 61% In favor of taking it away. 33% oppose. 6% up in the air.

USA TODAY
Americans strongly oppose laws taking away the collective bargaining power of public employee unions, according to a new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll. The poll found 61% would oppose a law in their state similar to such a proposal in Wisconsin, compared with 33% who would favor such a law.

6. Consider it a knock-out question for new posters to this site
If someone starts talking about how he or she is "worried" that supporting the Unions doesn't have 40% support...well, we can probably figure out the rest.

20. it is unlikely that they will issue a correction, and if they do
it will be about 3 seconds at a time when viewership is lowest. Compared to a long conversation based on the false premise which was held when viewership is higher.

That is just how they do business.

37. Whoever thought it up probably got a raise...
...because the lie promotes the Fox agenda, and was not called out on the spot, and therefore their listeners heard that most people support stripping bargaining rights from unions. We know that there is a herd mentality; if "most people" take a position, then it may be regarded as accepted wisdom.

They do this shit on purpose and anyone who is paying attention knows it.

7. Today's Talking Point Is Planted
This is a classic example of a lie running around the world while the truth is putting on its pants. The seed has been planted...all day the wingnuts will chirp that stat and try to coopt the poll and result or at least confuse it. That clip will be played on rushbo and dreck and dozens of hate radio shows and the great unhinged will cite the lie as gospel and those with the truth will be pushed to try to conteract...and even with the facts on their side, they lose.

The best way for this power grab to succede is to convince enough people that up is down...something the GOTB noise machine excels at. How else do we have so many people who willingly vote against their own best interests??

11. They are intentionally lying to the American people
because they are not a news organization - they are a part of the Republican Party's attempt to manipulate people in this nation to do the bidding of the wealthy at the expense of the rest of the population.

they are, in fact, an enemy of democracy b/c democracy requires honest information.

they're scumbags.

31. Yes
Painfully so. One has to wonder how far someones head is up their ass to not notice. Case in point. One of their favorite tricks is to put D in back of a rethugs name when they are involved in a homosexual or financial scandal.

You would think that people in that district would say wait! I voted for that guy. Then again, most faux viewers probably have no idea who their rep is anyway.

Another dead giveaway is Roger Ailes. Then again, they don't know who he is either. SAD!

12. That the thing about propaganda
It is twisted and framed to give the message the propagandist wants. And when you have an audience who is willfully stupid, it works very well for them.

Those who watch FOX news will never see it published anywhere that the information was incorrect and if they did, they would immediately conclude that it was false. They want to believe the bullshit FOX sells.

This is par for the course for FOX, they do stuff like this darn near every single day. There will be no retraction and no apology. No matter how biased, heads would've rolled at the other networks. To get a stat wrong is no big deal (unless you do it all the time), but to then base an argument on that stat is a bigger deal

Glad people are on top of stuff like this, even though undoubtedly they miss some things with FOX. Here's specifically why I am glad. I debate regularly on a hobby site that I frequent in the politics section. It's about an 80% Conservative site, (mostly intelligent Conservatives) I fight the good fight over there and can get through to a lot of these guys often. Of course there is a thread about Wisconsin right now. Just a bit ago one of the worst Cons on there posted the FOX backward stat as support for their argument. Now I get to put the smack down on this lemming and his Faux News, Faux facts.

That's is why this is important News (the mistake), this is already absorbed into the RW talking points directly from FOX into the blogosphere in a matter of minutes. The retraction wont matter to the FOX sheeple viewers.

39. Good job Media Matters
Glad they watch Fake News so I don't have to. The 'we lie for republicans' network has been exposed so many times
they're in Guinness but it's viewership doesn't care..it's what they want to hear and Fox knows it.

Fox News is run as a purely partisan operation, virtually every news story is actively spun by the staff, its primary goal is to prop up Republicans and knock down Democrats, and that staffers at Fox News routinely operate without the slightest regard for fairness or fact checking.

Like an insider said it's their MO.

46. That is probably more common than you think...
Some months ago my local TV station (not Fox) asked in their daily poll whether marijuana should be legalized. I voted online and noted that percentages were vastly in favor of legalization.

The news anchor reported the results as directly opposite what was shown online. In my view, they figured that here in the midwest, opinion would have strongly opposed legalization When it didn't turn out that way they just cooked the numbers.

The interesting thing is that if you didn't check the numbers online you would never know the difference, so most viewers were none the wiser.
