This doesn't seem difficult to figure out. If he is so distrustful of his military that he brings in foreign mercenaries, then he is an enemy within.

Doesn't the Libyan military have a problem with that? Are they willing to do something about it?

Also, has anyone actually followed the order to conduct air strikes? That would be a provocative act.

I don't know why Gaddafi wants to go down this way. He could leave with the ability to say that he united Libya in the 70's, etc, etc. Peace (mostly), stability, etc.. Instead he's chosen to go down as an evil dictator willing to slaughter his own people.

I heard Christiane Amanpour say that the outcome will depend on how many people are willing to die for the cause. This is clearly true.

...jeeps on video. I couldn't tell so well but you can search on Yahoo and probably find it relatively easily. I don't think it means so much in the grand scheme of things (as far as him losing "points" with people by using them), foreign mercs have been used a lot in Africa to control the native folks. The people don't have much of a say, anyway, at that point. Of course he'd be an enemy of his people and I think it's arguable he is now, but when you're a tyrant and you can buy an army really cheap, who will shoot anyone you tell them to, it's a very attractive solution for a despot.
