Libyan Revolution Tweets, Day 7, Part 3 (Richard III in a bad & dangerous way)
Libyan Revolution Tweets, Day 7, Part 3 (Richard III in a bad & dangerous way)

"Let fall thy lance: despair, and die!" - Shakespeare, The Life and Death of Richard the Third, Act 5, Scene III, Bosworth Field

The world’s 100 largest arms dealers, excluding Chinese vendors, sold weapons for $401 billion in 2009, with US vendors remaining in first place

Today's threads: Part 1, Part 2

Yesterday's threads: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8, Part 9, Part 10, Part 11

Threads for previous days are in my journal

To make sure the Army doesn't swing the revolution to the people, with the silent complicity of world leaders more concerned about the stability of oil prices than people's lives, Qaddafi has brought in more than 35,000 North African mercenaries specifically from Chad, Nigeria, Guinea and Darfur. There's a Facebook video of a captured mercenary from Chad (Youtube here). Captured mercenaries confessed they were paid between $12,000 - $30,000 each. Today pamphlet ads were found in Nigeria offering them $2000/day for their savage work.

Is Qaddafi the only one paying these mercenaries? Or are EU governments, with their long history of hiring mercenaries, chipping in? I demand to know.

Audio:

Jazeera, I want to deliver this information, I confirmed it personally, on my responsibility. I am a Libyan citizen. Today in Benghazi they discovered a room underground, a room that is completely locked-in. Completely locked. Holding 1500 young men from Benghazi. From the 15th of February the first day of demonstrations to today when they got them out, the 22nd, they had been without food or water. They heard the voices from the barracks, noise, people. After they went to check, they got them out, God be praised, alive. 1500 young men, buried alive, buried alive. Muammar must be obliterated. We will not surrender. Our dead are in heaven, he is in hell. God bear witness that I have delivered this message, if there are any Muslims. God willing.

Benghazi is #Libya's second city. Tubroq is Mediterranean port with a revolutionary history linked to liberator Omar Al Mokhtar #feb17
28 minutes ago

Omar Mukhtar (Arabic عمر المختار ‘Umar Al-Mukhtār) (1862 - September 16, 1931), of the Mnifa,<1> was born in the small village of Janzour, near Tobruk in eastern Barqa (Cyrenaica) in Libya. He organized and, for nearly twenty years from 1912, led native resistance to Italian Invasion of Libya. The Italians captured and hanged him in 1931.

...

A teacher of the Qur'an by profession, Mukhtar was also skilled in the strategies and tactics of desert warfare. He knew local geography well and used that knowledge to advantage in battles against the Italians, who were unaccustomed to desert warfare. Mukhtar repeatedly led his small, highly alert groups in successful attacks against the Italians, after which they would fade back into the desert terrain. Mukhtar’s men skillfully attacked outposts, ambushed troops, and cut lines of supply and communication. The Italian army was left astonished and embarrassed by his guerrilla tactics.

...

Mukhtar’s struggle of nearly twenty years came to an end on September 11, 1931, when he was wounded in battle, then captured by the Italian army. The Italians treated the native leader hero as a prize catch. His resilience had an impact on his jailers, who later remarked upon his steadfastness. His interrogators stated that Mukhtar recited verses of peace from the Qur'an.

In three days, Mukhtar was tried, convicted, and, on September 14, 1931, sentenced to be hanged publicly (historians and scholars have questioned whether his trial was fair or impartial<2>). When asked if he wished to say any last words, Mukhtar replied with a Qur'anic phrase: "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un." ("To God we belong and to Him we shall return."). On September 16, 1931, on the orders of the Italian court and with Italian hopes that Libyan resistance would die with him, Mukhtar was hanged before his followers in the concentration camp of Solluqon at the age of 70 years.<3>

But she's holding up amazingly well -- don't know if anyone else could do this.

And she's explained that if I try to help by posting tweets at the same time she does, it just slows her down to check to avoid duplicates. So I've stopped doing that.

But I'll help when/if she wants help again...and I'll keep reccing her topics, since they should all be high on the Greatest page.

DICTATOR CHIC

Colonel Qaddafi—A Life in Fashion

Since completing his transition from international pariah to statesman, Colonel Muammar Qaddafi—the longest-serving leader in both Africa and the Arab world—has brought color and his own eccentric panache to the drab circuit of international summits and conferences. Drawing upon the influences of Lacroix, Liberace, Phil Spector (for hair), Snoopy, and Idi Amin, Libya’s leader—now in his 60s—is simply the most unabashed dresser on the world stage. We pay homage to a sartorial genius of our time.

Qaddafi, in a lineup of G8 leaders at a summit this year in L’Aquila, Italy, channels Saturday Night Fever in a white suit under the traditional Arabic bisht, accessorized with a small billboard of medals and, on his right breast, a brooch of Africa, just in case anyone forgot that Muammar is the president of the African Union. From UPI/Landov.

UK Sniper Rifles Sent To Libya 'Never Fired'

5:29pm UK, Wednesday February 23, 2011
Sophy Ridge, political correspondent
Britain approved the export of sniper rifles to Libya just months before Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's troops began killing protesters - but it is understood they were disabled and securely in storage.

Some protesters were wounded when the regime clamped down on opposition

...

But the firms that manufactured and bought the weapons said they could not be fired and were only used for display purposes.

...

They were not fired and were only used for display purposes, the firms added.

A spokesman for Manroy PLC and RPA International Ltd - the manufacturers and the company which bought them - said at no point were the weapons handed to the Libyan government or their agencies.

...

All of the weapons were disabled and could not have been used, they added.

33. The current interviewee on AJE
former cultural minister under Khaddafi/Qaddafi/Ghaddafi is a real piece of work.

His glass eye betrays his apparent makeover, but he is squawking about Khaddafi/Qaddafi/Ghaddafi and snitching all kind of anecdotes about his days with the dictator. He appears to be sincere and angry, but also comes off as someone that is positioning himself for the aftermath. The other fellow that is also being interviewed is such a contrast to him, it is amazing.

The former minister tells that Khaddafi/Qaddafi/Ghaddafi is really psychotic and does not have long to go.

Their response to the last 10 world disasters should have opened up the worlds eyes. Expect a Bush/Clinton Libya fund any minute now. Not one fucking penny!

Still trying to sell their fake Iran Revolution to the world. Didn't work b4 and not working now. Empires refuse to die gracefully.

German Law On Internet Blocking Challenged In Constitutional Court

23 February, 2011 » Internet Blocking

On 22 February 2011 the German Working Group against Internet Blocking and Censorship (AK Zensur) submitted their complaint against the German law on Internet blocking to Germany's Constitutional Court. The law is directed against online child abuse material and had come into force on 23 February 2010, setting a one-year deadline for the complaint.

AK Zensur and many others had fiercely opposed the law and announced that a complaint would be filed when the law was enacted by Parliament in June 2009. An online petition against the law collected 134 000 signatures in May and June, the highest number ever achieved at the German Parliament's online petitions system. A curious situation emerged when the government changed after the elections in September 2009, taking the liberal party FDP into power in a coalition with the conservative CDU/CSU. The FDP had opposed the blocking law in their election campaign, and before the law came into force, it was agreed that it would not be fully implemented. In a legally dubious move, a "non-application directive" by the Interior minister stipulated that initially, only take-down was to be attempted, and the governing parties agreed that a review would be held about a year later.

This created something of a legal absurdity as the consequences of the law are not fully felt at the moment when the deadline to complain is expiring. But AK Zensur and its lawyers are confident that even now, many aspects of the law are in clear violation of the German Constitution, and several experts had voiced similar concerns at a parliamentary hearing before the law was enacted. While political support for the ill-fated law has widely diminished, the governing parties have not found the will to abolish it in a new Parliamentary act. AK Zensur is hopeful that with its complaint, it will be able to do the politicians' homework for them. A website collecting signatures to support the complaint in the political debate will be started soon.

It is about a monastery wall that was torn down

message #13

1 - the army did not attack the monastery

2- There is no intention of targeting this or any other places of worship in Egypt

3 - What was removed was a wall built on the road on government property without permission

We ask Egyptians not to listen or spread these rumors that divide this great nation at this sensitive time
