With a bullhorn pointed skyward yesterday, former Gov. Ted Strickland exhorted the sea of protesters around him to stop Senate Bill 5, something he could have done 6 1/2 weeks ago with his veto pen.
Although voters sent him to the sidelines after one term, Strickland hasn't faded into the sunset as most vanquished politicians do, opting instead to become a leader of the opposition to a bill that public-employee unions contend threatens their existence.
"I'll continue to support their efforts," Strickland said after addressing the crowd.
Flanked by some of his former staff members and U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Niles, Strickland said state unions worked with him to save money by accepting pay freezes and 20 unpaid furlough days.
