Threads for previous days are in my journal

To make sure the Army doesn't swing the revolution to the people, with the silent complicity of world leaders more concerned about the stability of oil prices than people's lives, Qaddafi has brought in more than 35,000 North African mercenaries specifically from Chad, Nigeria, Guinea and Darfur. There's a Facebook video of a captured mercenary from Chad (Youtube here). Captured mercenaries confessed they were paid between $12,000 - $30,000 each. Today pamphlet ads were found in Nigeria offering them $2000/day for their savage work.

Is Qaddafi the only one paying these mercenaries? Or are EU governments, with their long history of hiring mercenaries, chipping in? I demand to know.

European Union calls for investigation into possible crimes against humanity ahead of emergency UN meeting.
Last Modified: 23 Feb 2011 18:04 GMT

World leaders and rights activists have criticised the Libyan government's violent response to protests

International condemnation of the violent crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Libya has escalated, with the European Union pushing for a UN-led probe into human rights abuses and preparing for possible sanctions against the African nation.

A draft proposal by the 27-nation bloc on Wednesday spoke out against "extremely grave human rights violations committed in Libya, including extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests, detention and torture of peaceful demonstrators," and said they could "amount to crimes against humanity".

The bloc has also agreed to prepare possible sanctions on Libya. Experts will now draw up a list of proposed measures, which could include visa bans, asset freezes, an arms embargo and other restrictions, before EU governments agree when to impose them.

The agreement came after Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, urged the EU to impose "concrete sanctions" on Libya, and David Cameron, the British prime minister, called for a full United Nations Security Council resolution on the issue.

Part of Interior Ministry compound torched in Cairo
From Ivan Watson and Amir Ahmed, CNN
February 23, 2011 -- Updated 1727 GMT (0127 HKT)

Soldiers help extinguish a fire at a building adjacent to the interior ministry set by former police officers in downtown Cairo

Cairo, Egypt (CNN) -- Smoke billowed into the sky over Egypt's capital Wednesday from a fire at the Interior Ministry compound, a blaze witnesses say was set by protesters upset about labor issues.

Part of a building, surrounding buildings such as the criminal records building, and several cars had been torched. Witnesses said the flames could have been ignited by Molotov cocktails.

Soldiers and police rushed to scene and a couple of men were detained, the witnesses reported.

The compound is three blocks away from Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the sometimes violent clashes that eventually brought down the 30-year regime of President Hosni Mubarak February 11. Skirmishes also took place near where the fire burned Wednesday.

While the protests convulsing Bahrain and Libya this past week occurred in vastly different contexts — and will likely produce very different results — both were met with conspicuously swift crackdowns. And in both cases, reports suggest the Libyan and Bahraini regimes deployed foreign fighters and mercenaries against their own citizens, lethal clashes that left scores wounded and many dead.

Though difficult to substantiate in the current chaos, reports from eastern Libya, in particular from the city of Benghazi, claim that snipers and militiamen from sub-Saharan Africa gunned down residents on the streets. The Dubai-based al-Arabiya network says some of the guerrillas were Francophone mercenaries recruited by one of the sons of dictator Muammar Gaddafi. Qatar-based al-Jazeera detailed pamphlets circulated to mercenary recruits from Guinea and Nigeria, offering them $2,000 per day to crack down on the Libyan uprising. And, as further reports of defections from the Libyan military filter in, the cornered Gaddafi regime may turn more and more to hired guns from abroad. On television channels and Twitter, frantic rumors circulated about Gaddafi preparing for a mercenary-backed counteroffensive against his opponents.

While the violence appears to have pushed Libya to a tipping point, protests in Bahrain slackened after a week of bloody confrontations between demonstrators and the country's security forces. Sectarian tensions underlie the unrest, with the tiny island kingdom's Sunni Muslim monarchy pitted against the country's predominantly Shi'ite population. A significant segment of the state's security personnel are Sunnis brought in from countries like Syria, Iraq, Jordan and Pakistan to buttress the ruling dynasty's authority. It's a policy that Shi'ites say is symbolic of widespread institutional discrimination in Bahrain, and it played a key role in clashes earlier this month when uncompromising — and often foreign — security forces violently dispersed protesting crowds, killing at least six.

The popular outrage surrounding the use of these foreign soldiers in the crackdowns isn't surprising, but it's only in the past century that the armies of most of the world's nation-states have actually reflected the demographics of their countries. For centuries before, most militaries contained whole regiments of mercenaries and roving soldiers of fortune and were often staffed by officers from foreign lands. The term freelance — now a feature of journalistic lingo — still carries its original martial connotation from a time when companies of fighting men raised their blades in the service of the highest bidder.

The last one is partly apologetics and to that extent should be ignored, but it does offer a more complex view of Libyan racial politics and identity as well as Gaddafi's manipulation and involvement with States to the south.

Libya, Day 9: "My Heart Is Burning With Sorrow"
22 FEB 2011 08:04 PM

VIDEO

Al Jazeera says of the above video:
You must watch this. The family of Mohamed Bouazizi, the young Tunisian from Sidi Bouzid whose act of self-immolation triggered the Tunisian Uprising, has a message for the families in Libya who have lost their loved ones to the violent repression of the protests.

Below is the second half of today's news round-up. From the Guardian:Gaddafi is not standing down or leaving the country. He said he would die in Libya "as a martyr". It was his first major speech since the beginning of the unrest that threatens to topple the regime. One of his sons, Saif, is expected to again address the country tonight. The Libyan leader has also telephoned Silvio Berlusconi, with whom he has forged a friendship, to tell him that "everything is fine" in Libya. But refugees streaming across Libya's eastern border into Egypt said Gaddafi was using tanks, warplanes and foreign mercenaries to fight the growing rebellion.

More on the Qaddafi/Berlusconi relationship here. The latest from AJE:
Libyan government spokesman gives press conference outlining the vision of Gaddafi's eldest son, Saif al-Islam. Plans for reform include boosting payments to the unemployed. Also announces the formation of a committee to investigate events over the past couple of weeks. He says people "will be shocked by the extent of the distortion committed by Arab and foreign press and media. The spokesman goes on to attack "the brothers in Qatar" . ...

Sudan says Darfur rebels involved in Libyan clashes

KHARTOUM | Wed Feb 23, 2011 10:48am EST
(Reuters) - Sudan's Foreign Ministry accused Darfur rebels on Wednesday of involvement in Libyan violence as Muammar Gaddafi tries to quell a popular uprising.

Gaddafi has long hosted Darfur rebels, including the leader of the main rebel group, the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), Khalil Ibrahim who remains in Libya.

Witnesses have said Gaddafi has used African mercenaries to fight his people as he tries to crush the revolt against his rule that Italy says has killed as many as 1,000 people.

"There are elements from the Darfur rebels involved with the unfortunate events happening in Libya right now," Foreign Ministry spokesman Khalid Musa told Reuters on Wednesday.

...

Libya directly borders Darfur and Gaddafi, despite being an ally of Khartoum, has also supported the insurgents since the conflict began in 2003.

In a television interview, Seif al Islam Kadhafi's son, pretends to agree to reforms while threatening to drag the country into "civil war" with the risk of "rivers of blood". These recent statements are shocking! We urge the French authorities to outspoken and act urgently to stop this massacre and that the Libyan people can express themselves freely.

And have been prosecuted protesters even far away places and arrested several of them and knew them so far: Joanne Elliott, Rudy Io, Mohammed starling, Ayas Mekdad, AMR Kukes, Ibrahim al-Murr, Muthana Hamzawy, Ghassan Zakariya, loop Mekdad, Taha Mohammed, but some estimate that the number of detainees reached to 20 people.

According to an eyewitness to the site "Facebook" that one officer was yelling at the protesters and the burqa tough words and say, "Anto protesters against Muammar? ... Violin Grtoa of Tunisians and Egyptians? ... Blindness in your Lord, Shaw ()....".

Gaddafi, the daughter of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi as a goodwill ambassador because of the bloody events in Libya.

He said UN spokesman Martin Nesirky in New York, said Aisha Gaddafi, was chosen for this task in the framework of the United Nations Program for Development to talk about violence against women and AIDS in Libya.

....

And Aisha Gaddafi, a professor at the law and was part of the defense team for Saddam Hussein after the fall of his regime.

And exported worldwide condemnation of her father Muammar Gaddafi after the bloody repression of the demonstrations taking place in the People's Libya a week ago.

Moroccan single mother burns herself in protest
Wed Feb 23, 2011 12:54pm EST

RABAT (Reuters) - A young Moroccan set herself on fire after being excluded from a social housing scheme because she was an unmarried mother, a local government official said on Wednesday.

...

Mother-of-two Fadwa Laroui, 25, used flammable liquid to set herself on fire in front of the town hall of Souk Sebt, in central Morocco, late Monday, the town's mayor Boubker Ouchen told Reuters.

...

Laroui is the first Arab woman known to have set herself on fire in a protest at social conditions after Tunisian fruit vendor Mohamed Bouazizi's self-immolation on December 17 led to a revolution that toppled President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali after 23 years in power and prompted several Arab men to do the same.

...

He denied newspaper reports that the authorities had destroyed the shack she, her two children and her parents were living in.
