1. Why not ask the Vet where the spaying is being done?

6. they said the rabies was cool to do early/repeat
and it is required by law. Vet's office is who requires the DHP - receptionist said they don't recognize the Mexican records BUT that I could go to the feed store and get the shot to give myself and just bring the sticker in. Now, it makes no sense to me that they would take my amateur word for it and not the tag off the Mexican vaccine which is in her Mexican record book signed by a Mexican veterinarian.

My question kind of needs to be answered today - should I give her the shot anyway, or should I just buy the shot say I did and bring the sticker in. (and save it for September) I'm stuck with having to do the rabies again as it has to be given by a vet (American).

2. I can't imagine it being a problem...at the clinic i volunteer all homeless cats
get the rabies shot when they're fixed, and since some are abandoned cats, they might have had shots at some point...we have no recrods at all on them. Never had an issue with it. But ask the vet what the risks are...probably minimal.

7. it probably isn't a big deal
just wondered if there was any info on it - see the reply above - rabies has to be done, some leeway involving a bit of dishonesty on my part on the other. I don't like the dishonesty part, but would be willing if there is any risk to the early shot (and I would give it to her in September when it is due)

3. I agree with asking the vet, although it sounds like he will just say
it is ok since he said you had no choice. By law, you have to do the rabies vaccine if the one from Mexico is not acceptable. If it were me, and the shots are two different shots (they are for cats), I would just get the rabies shot now.

I see you are in Arizona. Are you paying for the spay or neuter? If so have you checked online to see if there are any free programs for your area? I'm in Tucson & was able to get both my girls spayed for free & they didn't even ask me about them having any shot's.

I screwed myself with my irresponsible pet ownership on this deal. In backwards, third world Mexico you can get a dog birth control shot. (nobody around here has ever heard of such a thing - obviously not enough $$$ in it for the vets) Lupe's expired Jan 11th and I had planned to spay her in December - well THINGS happened, mostly the almost-daily vehicle breakdowns. At any rate, it didn't get done. She came into heat on January 11th! Pretty amazing eh? The vet didn't want to do it then so we waited. She MIGHT have been exposed one morning when there were some other dogs here but pretty sure not - still I don't want to risk it so I need to do this NOW just in case she is bred.

There is a low cost program here but of course they are booked up until April. Along with no birth control chemistry in the US, there is apparently no preg test for dogs (WTF? I find that REALLY hard to believe) so I can't even get her tested to see if it is safe for me to wait until I can get her done for less. It's not THAT big of a deal for me to pay full price, she is a dog after all, not a human and though things are tight and will be after I pay for this, I can handle it.

It just seems so silly that animals are used for so much testing and now you can have all kinds of expensive cancer treatments and insane complex surgeries for pets that they don't even have a pregnancy test for dogs?

Oh and of course if she is bred, it will cost extra (and I wonder if they ever are NOT bred if you admit to possible exposure?)

sorry for the rant - you were kind to give advice and unfortunately for a LOT of reasons, no I am not in Pima county. Recycling is another one!

11. Don't be sorry we all need to rant from time to time
I was very lucky to have gotten my girl's done for free & I just try to help others do the same here in Arizona as most don't know about the free program. I was also very surprised that they did not ask for any shot info. on them, I had just moved here & had it still packed away. Yes all of what you said is very true! I do hope it all works out okay for you. Take care

5. My vet gave my dog a rabies vaccine a year too early, and it was no big deal.
