Mom blows $32,000 on daughter's 6th birthday
Source: San Francisco Chronicle

America is the land of great extremes, especially when it comes to children's birthday parties.

You have parents throwing unpretentious, humble, back-to-the-basics birthday parties (with a holier-than-thou undertone) in places such as Brooklyn, N.Y., Berkeley, Calif., and Portland, Ore. Invitations are paperless Evites. Cakes are made with eggs from the backyard chickens. And the guests' party favors are star-shaped crayons made from recycled Crayolas by a mom who sells green goodie bag items on Etsy.

And then you have the extravagant birthday balls featured on TLC's new show Outrageous Kid Parties, which premiered earlier this week. The show documents middle-class parents as they go above and beyond their means to spoil their little darlings with over-the-top celebrations. The series features four 30-minute episodes.

The first episode follows a 45-year-old mother named Nicole who spends a staggering $32,000 on her daughter's sixth birthday (because 6 is such an important milestone and calls for a $2,100 nine-tier cake).

3. My cousin spent $57K on her daughter's "teen" bedroom
for her 13th birthday present..:eyes:

While she was doing that, we were paying medical bills for our son's most recent surgery "present"..

But hey..she married a rich guy who loved to spend money.. and it was her choice.. and some decorator & some carpenters made some money..

44. WTF do you put in a kids' room that costs $57K? Unobtainium?
I mean seriously you could buy $3K worth of furniture from an actual furniture store, and spend the rest on a nice luxury car.

6. I saw the show
It was beyond ridiculous. There are cameras in the house when the wife announces how much she wants to spend on the party ($10K). Under what premise did she get cameras in the house?

These shows pay for content. I wonder how much they paid her to be on the show.

That was the most ridiculous piece of shit video I have ever seen.

The little spoiled brat whines cause her fucking bird wasn't blue?

The mother has serious issues and needs to see a psychiatrist ASAP! And take the brat with her.

And I remember well the sudden, swirling defense of the latter at this very website on what was tantamount to an endorsement of trickle-down economics.

It was then I started to feel the first warm and comforting caresses of the soothing tendrils of cynicism.

11. It got her on TV so...
in the long run it could have been worth it. The magic of fake reality TV is you could go right back to obscurity or you could start earning huge $$. Talent need not be important just a willingness to generate fake news and attention. So I say if you got the chance and it's what you want, why not go for it. 32,000 $ might net a heck of lot more in the long run.

It is wrong when you see the entitled attitude of the little spoiled monster she has created. Parents need to teach their children humility and that they're not the center of the universe. Big fail for mom.

Edited on Wed Feb-23-11 06:56 PM by LanternWaste
I would imagine that a destitute farmer in eastern Rwanda would think that the outlay for American's predilections for computer games and DVD's is just as obscene as this party, yet the majority of us would rationalize that much like the parents in the OP story rationalize their own version of useless consumption.

The degrees may differ, but the justifications and defenses are the same...

37. That assumes that this money is literally "wasted"
That's not how economics works. On the one hand, people criticize the rich for "hoarding" and not participating in the economy, etc. and then they criticize them for stuff like this. Sure, in an abstract sense, it's an obscene expenditure, but so are a lot of stuff us average people buy when compared to a poor Bangladeshi, for instance. This has a more direct benefit on the local economy, than a lot of other stuff they could buy.

The stuff they paid for in this birthday party helped other people. They were paying money to people and businesses (probably mostly small businesses) to provide stuff for this birthday party. As long as they can AFFORD to spend it, I don't have a problem with it.

34. I blame the Discovery Channel
It used to be a great venue for documentaries. The Hoover Dam one was jaw dropping. The one about the airplane hitting the Empire State building is the first thing that myself and one of my best friends thought of on 9/11.

Then it became the Welding Channel.

Other than Shark Week it was complete nothingness....and arguing - sound familiar?

40. look at it this way.
when Nicoles daughter turns 13 and is pregnant by some guy she doesn't remember the name of, Nicole will have another milestone to celebrate, or not.

Or when Nicoles daughter turns 42 and has been through 4 marriages, 3 boyfriends and a "relationship with bennies or three", mommy can let her move back in.

My take, Nicole is an idiot, she might be rich, but she's an idiot.:hide:
