Wu says painkillers made him erratic.
Edited on Wed Feb-23-11 03:12 PM by RandySF
PORTLAND, Ore. — An Oregon congressman said Tuesday that he accepted prescription drugs from a campaign contributor last October, around the same time members of his staff complained of his erratic behavior.

Rep. David Wu told The Oregonian in a written response to a query that he had left another kind of painkiller — one prescribed by his doctor for neck pain — in Washington. He said the donor offered him an alternative, and he took two tablets.

"This was the only time that this has ever happened," Wu wrote. "I recognize that my action showed poor judgment at the time, and I sincerely regret having put my staff in a difficult position."

3. I live in Wu's district...
and while he votes consistently liberal, he has been a truly crappy legislator for years. He got into office by running an ugly, sexist campaign against the Democratic incumbent, and is consistently too busy worrying about China and high-speed rail to do anything for his own district. Rumors about his bizarre behavior have been floating for years.

If we were in a swing district I might be worried about what comes next, but the Portland metro area (Wu's district) has as much chance of turning red as Caribou Barbie has of winning Jeopardy.

We are blessed with some top-notch legislators in Oregon...Sen's Merkly and Wyden, Rep's Defazio, Blumenauer, and Schrader. People I'm actually proud to have represent our state.

Wu is just an embarrassment, and the sooner he's gone, the better.

6. The incumbent who precedeed him , Elizabeth Furse, did not run for reelection:
Rep. Elizabeth Furse says three terms are enough

HELVETIA, OR -- U.S. Representative Elizabeth Furse announced June 16 that she will not seek re-election in Oregon's First Congressional District.

"This is a job that is really public service and not a career," the Democrat said from her farm in Helvetia, near Hillsboro. "My family knew I was considering not running. After we discussed it, I realized that I missed them and I missed Oregon."

During her congressional career Furse -- one of only a few representatives with a full-time labor liaison staffer -- has compiled nearly a 90 percent pro-worker voting record as tracked by the national AFL-CIO's Committee on Political Education (COPE).

In her position, Furse has been able to secure money for programs such as the Westside light-rail project and salmon recovery efforts that bolster the Northwest's fishing industry.

7. You are correct. I'm hitting that age where memory plays tricks...
It was the other Democratic front-runner, Linda Peters, that he ran a sexist smear campaign against.

8. Sounds like he should be fired
What would happen to the vast majority of us if we admitted to taking prescription painkillers for which we did not have a prescription?
