Zimbabwe activists charged with treason

President Robert Mugabe's policies have been blamed for plunging the once-prosperous country into an economic crisis.

(CNN) -- Dozens of political activists and union members rounded up in Zimbabwe last week faced a possible death sentence as prosecutors Wednesday accused them of plotting an Egyptian-style uprising against longtime President Robert Mugabe.

The 46 defendants have been charged with treason, prosecutor Edmore Nyazamba told a packed courtroom. They were arrested Saturday after authorities said they were caught watching footage of the protests that led to the ouster of Tunisian leader Zine El Abidine Ben Ali of Tunisia in January and of Egypt's Hosni Mubarak two weeks ago.

"On 16 February they held a meeting and the purpose of the meeting was to org anise, strategize and implement the removal of a constitutional government of Zimbabwe by unconstitutional means, the Tunisian-Egyptian way," Nyazamba said.

"In their speeches, the accused highlighted that there was a long serving dictator/authoritarian leader, general hunger, poverty, unemployment and capitalist tendencies where wealth is enjoyed by a few individuals while the general populace is suffering."

The 60-year-old anesthetist who has been living in the Libyan city for over a year, said that one the first day of fighting in Benghazi, "out ambulances counted 75 bodies...200 on the second , then more than 500." On the third day, he added, "I ran out of morphine and medications."

He told the French magazine that forces attacking protesters "included police and the army but also mercenaries from Chad and Niger."

Cables show Libya pressed oil firms to reimburse terror costs

(Reuters) - Libya's ruling family tried to coerce billions of dollars from Libyan and foreign oil companies, and its leader Muammar Gaddafi exhorted the United States to sow division in Saudi Arabia, leaked American diplomatic cables reveal.

One cable seen by Reuters, sent from the U.S. embassy in Tripoli, shows Gaddafi's government exerting heavy pressure on U.S. and other oil companies to reimburse Tripoli the $1.5 billion Libya had paid in 2008 into a fund to settle terrorism claims from the 1980s.

The amount was the initial payment in a planned $1.8 billion fund. The cable suggests Gaddafi intended foreign oil companies to provide full funding for the scheme, which at the time was a key factor in improving ties between Libya and the United States.

Even before Libya paid into the fund, Gaddafi, "who prides himself on being a shrewd bargainer, made it clear that he intended to extract contributions from foreign companies to cover the ... initial outlay," according to the April 2009 cable titled "GOL ratchets up pressure on oil companies to contribute to U.S.-Libya claims fund."

Qatar's ambassador leaves Libya - state TV


Feb 23 (Reuters) - Qatar's ambassador to Libya has left the country a foreign ministry official told a briefing of foreign diplomats on Wednesday in Libya, where a revolt is threatening Muammar Gaddafi's 41-year rule.

"And the Qatari ambassador left the country," the official, whose name was not given said on state television.

Earlier this week Al Jazeera said Libya's intelligence agency was behind the powerful jamming signals disrupting its broadcast across much of the region.

Palestinian inmates at notorious Egyptian prison declare hunger strike

Ninety-six Palestinians held in Egypt's maximum-security Al-Aqrab prison have declared a hunger strike.

Prisoners claim they were jailed without justification and demand they be released immediately.

“Some of them obtained court release orders after it was proved that they weren't linked to Hamas or other Islamic movements in Gaza,” said lawyer Ibrahim Ali.

“Some of them are quite weak since they haven't eaten in days,” he added.

Anti-Qaddafi protesters disbanded by Dubai police

DUBAI // More than 100 people gathered at the Libyan Consulate in Dubai yesterday calling for Muammar Qaddafi, the Libyan president, to step down and for the UAE government to officially condemn the violence in the north African country.

Protesters entered the consulate grounds, destroying a portrait of the Libyan leader and replacing the flag on the building’s roof with the country’s former standard. Slogans such as “The blood of our martyrs will not go wasted” and “Tell Muammar and his sons: Libya has men”, were chanted repeatedly.

The crowd said they would stay outside the consulate until the Libyan regime fell, but agreed to disband peacefully at 3pm after police told them they could submit an application for a time and venue at which to continue their demonstration.

Since protests against government corruption began in Libya last Thursday, more than 300 people have reportedly been killed by pro-Qaddafi forces.
