World Response to Libya Called 'Shameful'
Source: UPI

LONDON, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Amnesty International Wednesday accused the United Nations and African Union of abandoning Libya to dictator Moammar Gadhafi and demanded action.

The human rights group called the U.N. Security Council response, which has consisted only of calls for restraint, "shameful." The council, it said, must impose an immediate arms embargo and freeze the assets of Gadhafi and his inner circle, and the General Assembly should suspend Libya from the Human Rights Council.

Amnesty International also said the African Union, which has not convened to discuss the crisis, should investigate the reported use of African mercenaries in Libya, secure its borders and "monitor suspicious flights."

The Arab League, which has suspended Libya's membership, should investigate human rights crimes there, Amnesty said.

3. They're right
Th UN is impotent and useless. Remind me again what its purpose is? Aside from issuing strongly worded letters of condemnation.

The UN was set up as a place for all nations to TALK about their problems BEFORE violence broke out.

In the afterglow of a World War with millions of deaths, it sounded like a pretty good idea, but human nature always trumps good ideas, and despots are pretty hard to get rid of until their own people are willing to risk life & limb to unseat them

The United Nations officially came into existence on 24 October 1945, when the UN Charter had been ratified by a majority of the original 51 Member States. The day is now celebrated each year around the world as United Nations Day.

The purpose of the United Nations is to bring all nations of the world together to work for peace and development, based on the principles of justice, human dignity and the well-being of all people. It affords the opportunity for countries to balance global interdependence and national interests when addressing international problems.

There are currently 192 Members of the United Nations. They meet in the General Assembly, which is the closest thing to a world parliament. Each country, large or small, rich or poor, has a single vote, however, none of the decisions taken by the Assembly are binding. Nevertheless, the Assembly's decisions become resolutions that carry the weight of world governmental opinion.

The United Nations Headquarters is in New York City but the land and buildings are international territory. The United Nations has its own flag, its own post office and its own postage stamps.

It was not instituted to be a "fighting force", ready to intervene anywhere, anytime..

5. the UN and AU have been inept too many times to count
But the US should still stay out.

What the hell is an African mercenary anyway? Isn't Libya in Africa? Or is it another euphemism for for black?

7. It is mercenaries from Africa outside of Libya.
Gaddafi learned from Tunisia and Egypt, that Libyans likely wouldn't kill their own, so he has been flying in mercs from other parts of Africa, paying them to do the dirty work.
