Rick Santorum: The Crusades Get A Bad Rap!
If you were worried there wouldn't be a 2012 candidate touting the pro-Crusades platform, then today is your lucky day!

"The idea that the Crusades and the fight of Christendom against Islam is somehow an aggression on our part is absolutely anti-historical," former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) told a South Carolina audience yesterday. "And that is what the perception is by the American left who hates Christendom."

Santorum's defense of the Crusades came in Spartanburg, S.C. reports Andy Barr of Politico. South Carolina is an early and important GOP presidential primary state, and Santorum is considering a presidential run.

Referring to the "American left," Santorum observed: "They hate Western civilization at the core. That's the problem." Sanoturm also suggested that American involvement in the Middle East is part of our "core American values."

"What I'm talking about is onward American soldiers," Santorum continued. "What we're talking about are core American values. 'All men are created equal' -- that's a Christian value, but it's an American value."

The Crusades were religiously sanctioned military campaigns waged in Europe during the Middle Ages and pre-dated the emergence of the United States by a few centuries. The original goal was to recapture Jerusalem from Muslim rule, though along the way the Roman Catholic forces massacred thousands of Jews, among others.

I'll admit to a bit of Palin boredom and overload, I needed another fucking crazy wingnut to keep me entertained.

There is nobody crazier than Rick Santorum and I'm hoping for an all out Twitter/Facebook cage match between the frothy one and the Wassilabilly.

Teresa Heinz once called him Forrest Gump with attitude - I think her strong dislike - even when she was a Republican was justified.

32. Why is it taking these guys and women so long to decide
if they are going to run for president??
Are they all afraid to be the first??
Or are they just trying to live off of the free money they get from their followers??
They get to travel around the country, eat free, just so they can say I am thinking about running
all on someone else's dime.

18. Wow!
He is really counting heavily on vote from people who are self-identified christians but ignorant of history.

How can anyone think that Christianity, before the modern day, believed that all men were created equal? Christianity was used as the justification for Slavery before the modern day precisely because all men were NOT created equal. Some could believe that they were a chosen people, and could condemn others as basically animals.

In recent times the Social Justice moment evolved within the Catholic Church and spread like wildfire from there, and truly does espouse the idea that all PEOPLE are equal. But I bet Santorum won't mention that the US government officially Opposed the Social Justice Movement, and opposed any Nun, Priest, Bishop or Cardinal who promoted it as a terrorist throughout South and Central America, because our government was backing all of the repressive governments, the death squads, and covering up the assassinations. We wouldn't be caught dead backing Social Justice, Equality, or the real creation of Democracy.

And the Crusades were not aggressive? Um, how is any attempt at invading a land you do not posses ever not aggressive? How is that possible?

The idea that the Crusades represent American Values is truly sickening. :puke: The idea that people will believe this horseshit, or even consider it, and maybe vote for him so that he can try to turn this into public policy in some way is a disaster in the making.

There is no way this guy should ever be allowed anywhere near another public office.

"CHRISTIANS." That is, yes, the soldiers marched at the behest of the Pope, but everyone who was Christian was of the one Christian faith at this time, so I find the distinction serving only to somehow try to separate the Crusaders from a non-extant group of "good-guy" NON-Roman Catholic Christians.

39. The Schism between the Catholics and the Orthodox church had already happened by that time
Indeed, the politics of the schism were intertwined with the Crusades. At the time of the First Crusade, some thought it could join the churches back together, as they fought against a common Muslim enemy; by the fourth, the Catholics were trying to install their own candidate on the Byzantine throne, melting down Orthodox icons, and sacking Constantinople.

He probably has tickets to the Pope John Paul II Beatification. You know that guy that when he was pope was a personal friend and protector of the founder of Legions of Christ. Marical Maciel who founded the Legions of Christ was accused of the sexual abuse of minors dating from 1956 in which the Vatican failed to take action. Since 1970 he was accused of the sexual abuse of numerous young children and seminarians. The abuse had span the decades dating from the 1940s. Finally after yet another investigation in 2004 he was forced to resign as Director of the Legions of Christ. Under the direction of Ratzinger, who would be elected pope up on John Paul II death, 24 more men came forward with accusations. In addition to having abused numerous boys, he is know to have fathered one child as admitted to by the Legions of Christ director and suspected of fathering others as well his speciality of molesting boys.

This despicable piece of trash who was protected by John Paul II solely because the Legions of Christ operated seminaries throughout the world. Their success was attributed to recruiting young impressionable boys mostly from extreme poor families with a promise of a free education. Several bishops have ban them from operating in their dioceses due to their brain washing of young kids to believe they had been specially chosen by Christ for His ministry. Finally at long last with Pope John Paul II finally in his grave and unable to protect him, Ratzinger ordered him to life of penitence and prayer. As recently as 2009 a suit was filed by three of a possible six children of Marciel's seeking to recover from his extensive estate. At the time it was revealed that a woman whom he abused when she was young teenager was living with her child in a expensive residence Marciel had purchased for them.

That the Catholic Church would honor this flagrant protector of an abuser of innocent children is beyond the pale. I would suggest that Pope John Paul II be named as Patron Saint of Pedophiles.
