Chocolate's Startling Health Benefits
Edited on Wed Feb-23-11 05:18 PM by housewolf
Cross-posted from the Cooking & Baking forum for everyone who loves chocolate...

Chocolate's Startling Health Benefits by John Robbins (yes, THAT John Robbins (Baskins & Robbins son, "Diet for a New America", vegetarianism advocate))

The food police may find this hard to take, but chocolate has gotten a bad rap. People say it causes acne, that you should eat carob instead, that it's junk food. But these accusations are not only undeserved and inaccurate, they falsely incriminate a delicious food that turns out to have profoundly important healing powers.

2. The chocolate that has the health benefits is the very dark kind...
Like most Americans, I was raised on the ooey gooey milk chocolate and the dark 60-85% cocoa content dark chocolate with the health benefits tends to be pretty bitter in comparison. I guess that is good because I don't have the urge to sit there and eat block after block of it. But, it definitely is an acquired taste.

I strongly suspect most who are celebrating the health effects of chocolate are mistakenly using it as license to grab the snickers bars or maybe the nutella. Sorry, folks... That doesn't get it...

Sigh...;)

3. Chocolate and Cocoa, the discovery of both ended the age of Discovery
Edited on Wed Feb-23-11 05:20 PM by happyslug
Columbus started the Age of Discovery by discovering the New World, Magellan was the first man to circle the globs (Actually his ship was, Magellan died in the Philippines). Hudson discovered Hudson Bay and the Hudson River. The Portuguese discovered Brazil and the way to India. Why did men go bravely into the unknown? Woman DEMAND some thing their needed and that men could NOT provide, till Cortes brought back Chocolate--and women finally got wanted they have wanted and their husband/Sons/Fathers could then settle down as long as the Chocolate held out....
