Huckabee Slams Obama On DOMA, Implies Link Between Gay Marriage And Broken Homes
http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/02/huckabee-slams-obama-on-doma-implies-link-between-gay-marriage-and-broken-homes.php

Huckabee noted that 33 states have affirmed, via ballot initiatives, that marriage should be between a man and a woman.

"When the voters are so overwhelmingly (supportive of DOMA) what does the president believe he knows that citizens in all these other states don't," Huckabee said.

-snipping out paragraphs about polls showing rising support for same-sex marriages-

Nonetheless, Huckabee opposes gay marriage on the grounds that, according to him, it destroys traditional families.

"There is a quantified impact of broken families," Huckabee said. "{There is a} $300 billion dad deficit in America every year...that's the amount of money that we spend as taxpayers to pick up the pieces because dads are derelict in their duties."

More imaginary "facts" from the RW alternate universe...

1. What do heterosexual broken homes have to do with gay marriage?
Unless he's asserting that all these "missing" dad's are running off to be in gay relationships. If that's the case, they're keeping that little gem well-hidden.

Of course, I'm sure he would've argued against Loving v. VA too.

That is all.

4. From the "make shit up" brigade.
The Remakelicans are ramping-up their fantasy machine and adding more plot and drama to their pulp-fictions. They sure are "creationists", only in real-time and present-day.

Gee, and all it would take is a collective chant: "Bullshit! Bullshit! Bullshit!" So simple and yet so difficult to attain when you have huge armies of propagandists marching about. Its a story written by think tanks, to front organizations to mass media.

The teaser for the end of this ongoing story was written already by authors like Orwell and Huxley. In fact, this story is becoming plagiary, more and more.

5. Did Huckabee just say that Rush Limbaugh and Newt Gingrinch
are gay?? Seven marriages between them and the reason is that they are gay. Who would have guessed it??

6. That's rich. . .
A bunch of divorced heterosexuals pontificating on the sanctity of marriage and who "un sanctified" it.

7. REALITY REBUKES EVERYTHING REPUBLICANS SAY
South Carolina, with its prohibition on collective bargaining, is at or near the absolute bottom in virtually all educational metrics.

Nevada, with its 0% corporate state income tax, has the highest unemployment in the nation.

Massachusetts, with its gay marriages, has the lowest divorce rate in the nation.

Republicans are full of shit.

8. Wait...
Wouldn't more homes with TWO dads then help fix that deficit faster? I don't get Huckbee's math on this...

10. My thoughts exactly, Shiver...
Two dads per household could indeed save the nation.
Or something.
You beat me to it!

12. Obama is not saying that he likes gay marriage or that gay marriage
is socially positive. He is simply saying that, under our Constitution, marriage is a fundamental right that the government cannot deny to an individual without a compelling reason. That the majority does not approve a gay marriage is not a compelling enough reason to deny the right to marry to a couple because they are gay.

At the same time, couples do not have a fundamental right to marry in Huckabee's church, so Huckabee does not have to marry gay couples if he doesn't want to.

13. Defining marriage has always been a state responsibility
not a federal one. A true believer in states rights would want to leave it that way. Doma is the only federal marriage act I know of.

14. Throw in full faith and credit clause.
Other states would have to recognize gay marriage if a gay married couple moves from Massachusetts, say, to a state that does not recognize gay marriage.

A judge in Dallas granted a gay couple a divorce who moved to Texas and the State AG, Greg Abbott, had a hissy fit over it.
