Newspapers, GOP call for congressman to resign
SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Seven-term Democratic Rep. David Wu faced increasing pressure on Wednesday to step down amid a series of bizarre revelations in recent days about his mental health, including a photo he sent to staffers during his re-election bid showing him wearing a tiger costume.

The state Republican chair and one of Oregon's largest newspapers said Wu should resign, but Wu says he has no intention of quitting.

"He has a really important job, and the citizens of Oregon and the citizens of the congressional district deserve to have a congressman who's completely focused on serving them and being a great congressman," Oregon Republican Party Chairman Allen Alley said on Wednesday.

Wu said on Tuesday that it was "unprofessional and inappropriate" to send pictures of himself wearing a tiger costume to staff members while he was in the middle of a heated campaign last year. He also acknowledged taking two tablets of a pain killer that were given to him by an unnamed campaign donor.

"This was the only time that this has ever happened," the congressman said in a statement of the pain killer episode. "I recognize that my action showed poor judgment at the time, and I sincerely regret having put my staff in a difficult position."

1. But it is perfectly OK
for a republican to dress like an SS Storm-trooper because he is reenacting history!
And god knows what they are taking to keep their little brains from exploding with all the lies and misinformation they spew.

2. Where was the GOP when the switch in Reagan's head clicked off?
Or when Strom Thurmond was babbling in his diapers?

I think if he just brushes it off and makes a joke about it, people really aren't going to care.

24. LAME
But this doesn't provide any sort of gauge to me of his ability to comprehend and make decisions on political issues.

Bill O'Reilly always dresses so nicely though, tie and everything.

9. What am I missing? Is the only sign of mental illness is that he is being treated for depression or
is there something more serious that is not mentioned in the article.

My brother is seriously mentally ill, and I am sensitive to people pointing a finger at someone that is depressed, post-partum depression, etc. and saying they are mentally ill - and implying they cannot function in society.

Making a big deal of a picture taken before a Halloween party is just plain silly. If taking a couple of pain pills is a big deal - we are all dead in the water.

Is this all a "big ado about nothing" - or is there more that is not being said.

16. Please do not resign, Rep. Wu! If you need further help, get it. But...
stay the course. There is no legitimate reason for you to resign.

29. but paying a prostitute is okay - keep your senate office and let the voters decide...
and they voted the guy back in. So explain to me how the tiger suit is worse than documented illegal hiring of a prostitute?

30. Apparently he's been acting erratically of late.
His staffers managed to keep it quiet in the last few weeks before the election, but a bunch of them resigned afterwards. If he is mentally ill, I hope he gets whatever help he needs.
