The editor of the Wisconsin State Journal attempted to defend its awful coverage of the massive protests happening in their own backyard.
Mixed with the complaints are occasional words of praise, and suggestions that we’re too far left in our news coverage and editorials, not too far right. So it goes when you try to play down the middle.
Many of the complaints have common themes. Such as: Why don’t we write about how the Koch brothers are behind Gov. Walker’s proposals? Why didn’t we point out that the pro-Walker crowd was dwarfed by the union protesters Saturday? And how come we publish politically biased cartoons by artist Phil Hands?
If you’re looking for answers: a) Because a deep investigation of the Koch brothers’ influence in Wisconsin would take weeks of research, and so far this episode has been going on for 10 days and we’ve had nearly every reporter scrambling just to keep up on the Square; b) We probably should’ve provided more perspective on the size of the pro vs. con crowd; c) Because Hands is a wonderfully talented cartoonist, and poking fun and making wild exaggeration is what cartoonists do.
To which, I responded:Hi John,
In your defense of your newspaper's inappropriate coverage regarding Walker's radical proposals, you write:
"If you’re looking for answers: a) Because a deep investigation of the Koch brothers’ influence in Wisconsin would take weeks of research, and so far this episode has been going on for 10 days and we’ve had nearly every reporter scrambling just to keep up on the Square;"
Try "teh google"

I know it takes a lot of effort to retype the Fitzgerald's press releases, but you don't exactly need a Deepthroat to figure out whats going on here.
Did you miss the election cycle? Are you unaware of the existence of billionaires in politics? Were you alive in 1979 when Mr. Koch made a run for president? For a paper that reprints teaparty talking points on a daily basis, you should at least find out who's spinning them for you.
As I told Scott Milfred, the State Journal has jumped the shark. At least the Fonz pretended he was from Wisconsin.
Best Wishes,
