Secret Service interviews Georgia constituent who asked who will `shoot' Obama; case is `closed matt
By Greg Sargent

By now you may have heard that GOP Rep. Paul Broun of Georgia failed to condemn a constituent who asked aloud who will "shoot" Obama at an event in Athens on Tuesday. The news is quickly going national as we speak.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports that Broun responded to the question -- who is going to shoot Obama? -- with this answer:

The thing is, I know there's a lot of frustration with this president. We're going to have an election next year. Hopefully, we'll elect somebody that's going to be a conservative, limited-government president that will take a smaller, who will sign a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare.

Not exactly a ringing condemnation. However, one group who took this seriously is the Secret Service. According to Ed Donovan, a Secret Service spokesman, the situation has been looked into.

"We're aware of the incident and the appropriate steps were taken," Donovan told me. "At this point it's a closed matter."

A law enforcement source confirmed that the Secret Service interviewed the constituent and determined that he or she was an "elderly person" who now regrets making a bad joke.

"In this case this was poor taste," the source says. "The person realized that."

Now there's the small matter of whether Broun regrets not condemning the comment. My understanding is more will be forthcoming from his office on this soon, so stay tuned.

2. If you look at the TB's, a large percentage
ARE elderly, SS-aged, angry white folks.

So, I'm sorry, but this doesn't fly for me. It IS this demographic who are having the violence tinged conversations and have been since they began gathering.

I'm a grandmother, what the hell does age matter when you are threatening the life of our President?

This sickens me.

Luckily - OFA has an organizing meeting TOMORROW in Memphis. I'm going, I'm volunteering and going to learn community organizing for the 2012 election. I've had enough of this and I'm going to help others to see the LIGHT in my neighborhood. 2012 will NOT be a repeat of 2010 on my watch!

Shine on!
Annette

7. How was that old man that shot the guard at the Holocaust Museum?
"The suspect, identified by law enforcement sources as James W. von Brunn, 88, of Annapolis, was said to be a longtime, "hard-core" supremacist whose Internet writings contain extensive, poisonous ravings against Jews and African Americans."

Angry old people have less to lose than young people so less to stop them from performing acts of violence.

8. +100 Very cavalier about killing our President
Is it because the Black Man is in the White House. IMHO - That IS the reason for all this vitriol.
I'm white - I hear what some of these people say, they're off gaurd and the ugliness just shines throught like a beacon.

3. I hope the SS talked to the Congress member as well. It is one thing for an "elderly person" to
make a "joke in poor taste", it is quite another for the congressman to whom the "joke" was directed to fail to correct the joker and the members of the audience who laughed inappropriately.

Congress members are sworn to uphold the Constitution. That means upholding all laws authorized under the Constitution. It is a Federal offense to threaten the President and the Congressman could have pointed that out to his audience.

4. If he'd have said something like that about Bush, Rep. Broun would have had him thrown in Gitmo...

I didn't know Broun was doing a townhall yesterday or I would have went. He usually keeps a low profile when he's in his supposed "hometown".

5. Joke? Joke? This person should be brought up on charges.
There are too many nut cases out there to even consider ignoring this horrible statement. Most of we elderly know the difference between a bad joke and a stupid, ill considered remark.
