1. He can stand as firm as he wants...
But what exactly do you want him to do? What is within his power to do to a state governing body? I'm really being serious here. I'd like to know.

5. Unless there's a Constitutional violation going on, here.
Which there may.

And even then, I'm not sure what the WH can do unless citizens initiate a challenge to this in federal court first.

2. How should Obama "stand firm" with the Governor of a state?

3. I don't believe ha has to GO to Madison,
but NOW would be a perfect time to change direction and use the Bully Pulpit to detail how important UNIONS have been for ALL Americans who Work for a Living, and that his administration stands solidly with the traditional Democratic Party of FDR/LBJ in protecting the Rights of Americans who Work for a Living.

I would LOVE to hear ANYONE in the Democratic party Leadership STAND UP and say those words, even if they don't really mean it.

"There are forces within the Democratic Party who want us to sound like kinder, gentler Republicans.
I want us to compete for that great mass of voters that want a party that will stand up for working Americans."
---Paul Wellstone

4. For a President to do any more than lend his support to
the workers, as he has done, is a risky thing. Federal and state issues are kept separate by our Constitution, and interference in state issues that remain unresolved is very rarely done by any President. Much caution is required when Presidents stick their noses into state issues.

As you are no doubt aware, several states don't even allow public employees to organize and form unions. The Federal government has nothing to say about that. Many states have laws preventing public employees from going on strike. The Federal government cannot change those laws.

It's a tightrope for any President when dealing with state issues. About the only thing a President can do is encourage the workers in their battle.

If the President makes a strong statement about Wisconsin's right to set labor policies for public employees, he risks more than you can imagine.
