Stop bashing the non-voters-work on GETTING them to vote by reaching out to them
Edited on Fri Feb-25-11 04:44 PM by Ken Burch
No one is won over by being insulted or told "it's YOUR fault" over and over.

You get nonvoters to vote by actually listening to them and then doing what THEY want. You get them by making them feel that there's a REASON to get involved.

Abuse doesn't win people over. Ideas and inspiration do.

It HURTS our chances in 2012 to attack those people.

1. They aren't paying any attention to what is said here....
In fact, they are barely paying attention to anything political. That's the problem. They get bits and pieces of headlines and factoids from brief encounters with the news. That's why the Republicans have been so successful even though self identified Republicans are a minority of the voters. They trumpet some negative crap that scares people and tilts toward their camp.

2. I know 2 people who don't vote ...
they both say "If I register to vote, I'll be picked for jury duty". I've explained it to them that MA doesn't do, even giving links to prove it, but they won't.

4. That's what people tell me in AZ.
I tell them that AZ doesn't do that anymore. They use all sorts of databases for jury duty including drivers licenses, state issued i.d., etc. Even if it exposes you to jury duty that is once every three or fours years at the most usually for one day. Hardly work giving up a right to vote.

3. Yes. It really is that simple.
Many of those people don't vote because they believe the choice really isn't a choice.

Give them reason to expect change.

I've thought back about every time I decided not to go to the polls, and it was always because I didn't see a real difference between the alternatives.

I can tell you, though, that if Obama doesn't put on that comfortable pair of shoes and get out to support labor, I'll be voting 3rd party rather than for someone who failed to get aggressively on the right side of a global issue.

5. Why do you think SOME people here are so committed to the negativity approach on this?
How could ANYONE believe that repeatedly attacking people for not voting is actually going to GET those people to vote?

That's NEVER worked before, for God's sake.
