Battle of Benghazi: How protesters seized city

BENGHAZI, Libya — The young men of Benghazi pounded the dreaded military barracks in the city center with everything they could find. They threw stones and crude bombs made of tin cans stuffed with gunpowder. They drove bulldozers into its walls. All under a blaze of gunfire from troops inside that literally tore people in half.

More than 100 were killed in three days of fighting. But in the end, the base fell and Moammar Gadhafi’s forces fled, executing comrades who refused to shoot.

The assault on the base known as the “Katiba” was the defining battle in the fall of Libya’s second largest city to the opposition uprising that has swept away Gadhafi’s rule in the eastern half of the country.

Now children clamber over the abandoned tanks inside the base and families drive around inside the sprawling compound, gawking at what for years had been a sort of feared Bastille, where detainees disappeared and where Gadhafi stayed when he was in town…

Kenyan mercenaries are among foreign soldiers helping the besieged Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi fight off an uprising.

This was confirmed on Thursday by Col Gaddafi’s former Chief of Protocol Nouri Al Misrahi in an interview with the Al Jazeera broadcasting network.

When asked where the mercenaries came from and how they were recruited, the first country he mentioned was Kenya. Other countries he listed are Chad, Niger and Mali.

Top Libyan oil firm staff join protests - Quryna

RABAT Feb 26 (Reuters) - Employees at Libya's Arabian Gulf Oil Co (Agoco) have joined the revolt against leader Muammar Gaddafi and have kept operations going since the unrest started, the online edition of the Quryna newspaper reported on Saturday.

Quoting a statement it received from what it said were the company's employees, Quryna said "the company runs its operations at all fields and production sites ... and has managed since the start of the uprising to sustain operations at its oilfields ... and at Al-Huraiqa port".

Agoco, affiliated to the state-owned National Oil Company, was pumping about 450,000 barrels per day in April 2010 from some of the country's biggest oilfields including Sarir and Nafoora, according to its website.

Ever since the dawn of civilization it has been assumed that the laws are to be made by the few people at the top and obeyed by the great mass of the common people. Such has been the conspiracy of the privileged class against the common man that it has been accepted that men have to be taught the difference between right and wrong; so the churches through religion and the state through law has arranged what is right and what is wrong and then has enforced obedience. So much noise has been made in the name of "human rights". But what are human rights? Is the white privileged class the sole custodian to decide the rights of man? The unbridled movement of the Seventh Fleet through the waters of the world threatening the freedom of the smaller nations is condoned and sanctioned in the name of the international law. Is it human? Is it moral? Is it right? Is it not ironical that a man responsible for supplying the weapons of mass destruction has assumed the role of arbiter of peace?

It is for the first time that Brother Qathafi - the Messiah of Common Man - has refused to accept that traditional code of moral behaviour which is heavily loaded in favour of a privileged class of people and the privileged nations. He says that "human rights" have no meaning if they have to be dictated by the few and enforced upon the great mass of the common people. There cannot be a greater insult of the common man than to assume that he has to receive his rights from a small minority of his fellow beings. This small minority - be it church, or state or any other instrument of governing - has not spared any pains in depriving the common man of his due rights. So successful is this small minority - the ruling class - that common man almost everywhere has come to believe that the modern institutions of democracy and parliaments are made to promote his welfare. But Brother Qathafi has issued a timely warning to the common man that so long as he does not learn to rule himself he will always walk into the traps laid by such institutions as the representative forms of democracy and parliament. The moment the common man elects a representative he surrenders his rights to the representative for the representative

Can an institution whose sole purpose is to plunder the authority of the people and usurp the rights of the common man stand the test of moral and human value?

An institution which plunders the authority of the people and usurps the rights of the common man is neither moral nor humane but is the greatest fraud against humanity. This obvious answer however raises yet another question. Why an institution which is neither moral nor human but a fraud against humanity is respected and cultivated by a very big part of the civilized society?....
