41. Bloomberg: not clear provisional government has support
Edited on Sun Feb-27-11 10:29 AM by JanDutchy
Rebel groups nominated former Justice Minister Moustafa Abdel Jalil as head of an interim government, Fathi Baja, a member of the city council in Benghazi, said today. The council was set up following the uprising that began on Feb. 15 in the city, which is one of several controlled by anti-Qaddafi protesters and army defectors.

The Security Council late yesterday voted 15-0 to freeze the foreign assets of Qaddafi and four aides and to bar them from traveling, in the broadest international effort to halt his regime’s attacks on demonstrators. The vote followed a plea by Libyan Ambassador Mohammed Shalgham on Feb. 25 for the UN to “save” his nation.

Mohammed Ali Abdalla, deputy secretary-general for the National Front for the Salvation of Libya, the country’s main opposition group in exile, said officials in his party had urged Abdel Jaleel and others to form an interim, alternative government. “This and the position of the international community will add pressure on Qaddafi,” he said by telephone from Dubai. “The country can now become united and organized in facing him and facing his oppression.”

It wasn’t immediately clear what form the provisional government might take or what support it has

There's no direct route (i.e. coastline road). They have to travel several miles inland - that should slow them down (and, hopefully, into a trap or an ambush).

33. Could be...
...a critical event. If Gaddafi is abandoning Sirt the situation in Tripoli might be even worse for him than hoped. Giving up Sirt effectively ends his chances of defeating the revolt in detail. Some defected officer out east needs to rally the troops and head west to end this. Still the westerners might pull a victory of on their own, payed loyalty have it's limits - particulary if you can't pay for it or it looks like your mercs aren't going to survive to payday.

A very touching story happened yesterday at the aid convoy preparation point in Cairo. #Egypt #Libya #Feb17
2 hours ago

A guy went to the organizers and said he wanted to travel with the aid convoy.

Organizers said only 3 people could travel, and there was a waiting list of ppl wanting to travel to #Libya with the aid convoys

He stayed and helped pack the trucks & when they were done, he told the organizer: I'll sit in the back of the truck.

The organizer told him: you can't, it's an open truck and you won't stand the cold. He said, I don't care, I want to go.

I'll put up with anything. But the truck driver refused. Organizer thought the guy would give up and go away.

But he stayed & after the driver got into the truck, the guy begged him & said: by God, plz let me go, don't deny me this

The driver kept refusing, saying he couldn't have more than 3 riders with him. The crowd started trying to convince the driver

But the driver was adamant. The guy's eyes filled with tears & he ran alongside the truck after it started moving&kept begging

He kept running and shouting, "Please, for God's sake, don't deny me this chance, I'll sit anywhere!"

But the driver drove off. The guy stood there, very upset and sad, trying to hold back his tears, crowd tried to console him

And he didn't leave until the organizer promised him a seat in the next aid convoy (today). End of story.

@freelibyan87 @ChangeInLibya didn't mean to make you cry, but it really represents how everyone here in #Egypt feels about #Libya ♥

If I get an update on whether the guy I tweeted about got to go with today's aid convoy, I'll tell you tweeps.

Reports coming out of Libya's third largest city suggest that Misurata is now in the hands of opposition supporters.

Khalid, a resident of Misurata, spoke to Al Jazeera's Sami Zeidan about who is in control after clashes and a standoff with an army unit.

He said security forces have been driven out of the city.

... As a court of last resort, the ICC's task is to try those most responsible for violence, but it will only act if there are no proceedings taking place at a national level.

HOW QUICKLY WILL THE PROCESS MOVE?

In its resolution on Libya on Saturday the U.N Security Council invited the ICC prosecutor to address the council within two months of the adoption of the resolution and every six months thereafter to report on actions taken.

Were Gaddafi to fall and a new government cooperative with the ICC to come into place, the investigation and possible prosecution of individuals could become easier.

Referrals to the ICC can be cancelled. Under the Rome Statute, the U.N Security Council can freeze investigations or prosecution proceedings for rolling periods of 12 months by making such a request to the ICC. (Reporting by Aaron Gray-Block and Greg Roumeliotis; editing by Alastair

Libyan Rebels Tighten Ring of Armed Control Near Tripoli
By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK and SHARON OTTERMAN
Published: February 27, 2011
...

Rebels, in control of the city, had reinforced its boundaries with informal barricades, and army units that had defected stood guard with rifles, six tanks and anti-aircraft guns mounted on the backs of trucks. In the central square here, a mosque was riddled with enormous holes, evidence of the government’s failed attempt to take back this city on Thursday. Nearby lay seven freshly dug graves belonging to protesters who had fallen in that siege, witnesses said.

“We are really suffering for 42 years, and people are asking here for the same things as other people of the world — they want the real democracy,” said Ahmed El-Hadi Remeh, an engineer standing in the square. He and other residents told how they had used stones to repel the government’s forces.

Proving how close opposition control has come to the capital, where Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi maintains tight control, the confidence of the demonstrators in Zawiya was remarkable, all the more so because it was witnessed as part of the official tour for international journalists that Col. Qaddafi’s government organized. The public relations effort, apparently intended to show a stable Libya to the outside world, appeared to backfire, as a tour of Tripoli had on Saturday.

Instead, the tour, whose minders were forced to wait at the city’s outskirts, showed a nation where the uprising had reached the capital’s doorstep, underscoring a growing impression that the ring of rebel control around Tripoli was tightening.

Libya’s revolution headquarters
Posted on February 27, 2011 by main

BENGHAZI, LIBYA — In Benghazi, Libya’s second-largest city, life has entered a new stage of revolutionary normal. Shops have re-opened next to burnt-out regime headquarters; the main justice building still stands, but its rooms are occupied by opposition media centres, and courtrooms have become kitchens.

Several hundred kilometres to the west, military units still loyal to long time leader Muammar Gaddafi guard the roads, detaining journalists and preventing approach to Tripoli, the capital.

But if any concerns remained about whether the opposition’s de facto capital was truly in anti-Gaddafi hands, they melted at the appearance of a child leaning out the window of a passing car wearing an afro wig with a red cap on top.

“Look at my son – Gaddafi!” said the man in the driver’s seat.
