31. I think it's the most stupid thing he could possibly do...
unless of course he wants to guarantee a global revolution. If the king of Saudi Arabia buys Facebook with the help of Goldman Sachs, it will tell everyone on earth, all the millions of Facebook users (and I'm one of them) who really runs the world. It would be like they are trying to buy the conscience/consciousness of the world--which is NOT for sale! The backlash would be unbelievable.

That's why I depend on Catherina's threads to keep up with the global revolution. I don't have a network on Twitter, and by the time I developed one everything would be over. The learning curve was hard enough with Facebook!

Why a king's ransom is not enough for Saudi Arabia's protesters
King Abdullah's offer of bribes to his country's alienated youth is no substitute for genuine reform

Mai Yamani
guardian.co.uk, Sunday 27 February 2011 20.11 GMT

No kingdom is an island, particularly when it sits in a sea of revolution. King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, watching the assault on Libya's strong man Muammar Gaddafi with his monarchy's usual complacency, thinks he can buy off protests with the promise of gifts.

Of course, the scale of the bribes the king offered last week to his country's alienated young generation – £22bn – is something only an oil-rich monarch could deliver. The Saudi king speaks as a father to the youthful population – after all, this is the only royal family to give its name to its people – and he expects them to obey the name al-Saud as they would their own father.

...

But Abdullah's kingdom is surrounded by waves of revolutionary rage lapping at the fortress: Yemen in the south, Bahrain in the east, Egypt, Tunisia and Libya in the west. Even the usually docile kingdom of Jordan is racked by the spectre of change. Saudi Arabia's royals have no doubt been shaken to their core by these disturbances and feel threatened by the successive, swift revolutions that have put paid to their cronies in Cairo and Tunis. How is it possible, they ask, for a few hundred shahids , in just two to three weeks, to bring down their fellow autocrats so quickly?

...

So it is no surprise that they mistake public demands for dignity and a genuine voice in government for petulant cries to be silenced with bribes and bread and circuses.

Silvio Berlusconi's party women 'terrified of catching Aids at bunga bunga parties'
The women who attended parties hosted by Silvio Berlusconi were terrified of contracting Aids and other sexually-transmitted diseases from him, according to evidence gathered by Milan prosecutors.

Model Barbara Guerra complained to a friend about the car she received from the prime minister

By Josephine McKenna, Rome 6:20PM GMT 27 Feb 2011

The claims, based on text messages sent between the women, cast further doubt on the Italian prime minister's insistence that the "bunga bunga" parties at his villas in Milan and Sardinia were nothing more than light-hearted dinners filled with jokes and songs.

A long-running tax fraud trial against Mr Berlusconi resumes on Monday and in April he faces a further trial over allegations of sex with an under age prostitute Karima El-Mahroug, known as Ruby the Heart Stealer.

According to evidence submitted by prosecutors, several women last year exchanged text messages in which they expressed their relief after medical tests cleared them of any sexually transmitted diseases.

"Have you done it? Is everything okay?" asked one unidentified woman in a message sent on Jan 8 2010. "All ok. White blood cells ok, there is no AIDS."

LIBYAN BISHOP ASKS MUSLIMS FOR PROTECTION

Nuns Barricaded in Their Home

ROME, FEB. 25, 2011 (Zenit.org).- The apostolic vicar who cares for Libya's few thousand Catholics has approached Muslims to ask for protection during the unrest in the country.

...

Given the bloody repression, Bishop Martinelli explained, "We entered into contact with the Red Crescent and other Muslim organizations to appeal for protection of the churches, of the convents, of our faithful and of the sisters who work in the hospitals."

According to 2005 statistics, Libya is home to some 70,000 Catholics and just eight priests and 30 women religious.

Three of those nuns are Franciscans who work at the Caritas center, some 10 kilometers (six miles) from Tripoli, where protests began again today, despite gunfire from Gadhafi supporters.

38. World Council of Churches - WCC - condemns violence in Libya
WCC condemns violence in Libya
22.02.11 also in Geneva - !!! -

On the final morning of its proceedings the World Council of Churches (WCC) Central Committee adopted a resolution concerning the escalating violence in Libya condemning the use of force on all sides and calling for the respect for human rights of all people in Libya.

The Central Committee has been meeting since 16 February and is the highest governing body of the WCC and meets every 18 months.

The resolution recognizes the growing violence in Libya and “expresses its deep concern about disturbing reports” of the killing of hundreds of protestors in clashes with Libyan security forces over the past few days.

“We call all parties to respect the human rights of all people in Libya and we urge that ways be found to establish a peaceful dialogue to end the violence,” the resolution says.

The resolution closes by saying that the 150 Central Committee members “pray and hope for the safety of the people of Libya, and for a non-violent and just resolution of this current conflict.”

African mercenaries “immune from prosecution”
Posted on February 27, 2011 by admin
The UN resolution that was agreed upon on Saturday called for the International Criminal Court to investigate the killings.

However, it has been widely reported that Gaddafi hired foreign mercenaries to carry out some of the killings. The US insisted that the resolution was worded in such a way that no one from a country that is not a member of the ICC can be prosecuted. Meaning that mercenaries from countries that are not ICC members cannot be prosecuted for any crimes they may have committed in Libya.

Libya: African mercenaries 'immune from prosecution for war crimes'
African mercenaries hired by the Gaddafi regime to kill Libyan protesters would be immune from prosecution for war crimes due to a clause in this weekend's UN resolution that was demanded by the United States.

yan militia members from the forces against Gadhafi escort a man who they suspect to be a mercenary Photo: AP

By Jon Swaine, New York 9:16PM GMT 27 Feb 2011

...

But it has been widely alleged that many of the attacks were in fact carried out by foreign mercenaries hired by Colonel Gaddafi. And the US insisted that the UN resolution was worded so that no one from an outside country that is not a member of the ICC could be prosecuted for their actions in Libya.

This means that mercenaries from countries such as Algeria, Ethiopia and Tunisia – which have all been named by rebel Libyan diplomats to the UN as being among the countries involved – would escape prosecution even if they were captured, because their nations are not members of the court.

to prevent a precedent that could see Americans prosecuted by the ICC for alleged crimes in other conflicts. While the US was once among the signatories to the court, George W. Bush withdrew from it in 2002 and declared that it did not have power over Washington.

...

Speaking to reporters outside the council chamber, Gerard Araud, the French UN ambassador, described the paragraph as “a red line for the United States”, meaning American diplomats had been ordered by their bosses in Washington to secure it. “It was a deal-breaker, and that's the reason we accepted this text to have the unanimity of the council,” said Mr Araud.
