CIA's top Libyan contact Musa Kusa may go down with Gaddafi.Foreign Minister Musa Kusa, who plotted assassinations and airline bombings as well as helped Washington pursue al-Qaeda terrorists, cannot defect to the opposition like other top Libyan officials, says a spokesman for a U.S.-based Libyan human rights group, because “he has too much blood on his hands.”

“He will not be part of any democratic government in the future, that’s a sure thing,” said Omar Khattaly, spokesman for the Libyan Working Group, which has offices in Atlanta, the United Kingdom, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Kusa was Gaddafi’s chief of intelligence from 1994 to 2009, when he was appointed foreign minister. But long before then Libyan exiles had dubbed him “the envoy of death” for sending hit men around the globe to eliminate opposition figures.

“There’s a lot of stuff in Libyan intelligence files that will make him make him look bad” to the opposition, added Vince Cannistraro, a former top CIA official who led the agency’s probe of the 1988 bombing of PanAm 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.

He was the first Western journalist to make it to Benghazi. He snuck in.

Is he reporting from somewhere else now?

I have a strong hunch he's somewhere he doesn't want to tweet about it. It's not like him at all to be so quiet.

I can't blame him for staying in Benghazi so long, though. Trying to move, he'd have a target on his back AND on his front for being an illegal border-crossing journalist.

The reporters who were able to report from Tripoli and Wazira were those who were allowed in officially--and accompanied by the regime's 'minders.' But a couple of them lost their minders and got some good reports in, including interviews with residents of Tripoli who were able to speak freely without the intimidation of the minders.

Funny, too, when the minders took the journos to Wazira and dropped them off at a demo that the minders thought was pro-Gadaffi, and it turned out to be anti-Gaddafi (about 2,000 people, they reported). Then the reporters were taken to a couple of pro-Gaddafi demos that they reported were very small, nothing like the size of the liberation demo. Gaddafi must have been PISSED to hear that!

I caught some of those articles you mentioned. Inside I was laughing at the govt's ineptitude. What sick, sad jokes the Gaddafi family is.

Somehow, I don't think there'd be much demand for him as a tour guide. Unless there's an opening at Vlad the Impaler's castle.

WASHINGTON — Obama administration officials held talks on Sunday with European and other allied governments as they readied plans for the possible imposition of a no-fly zone over Libya to prevent further killings of civilians by forces loyal to Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi. Further increasing international pressure on Colonel Qaddafi, the Libyan leader, Italy suspended a 2008 treaty with Libya that includes a nonaggression clause, a move that could allow it to take part in future peacekeeping operations in Libya or enable the use of its military bases in any possible intervention.

“We signed the friendship treaty with a state, but when the counterpart no longer exists — in this case the Libyan state — the treaty cannot be applied,” Italy’s foreign minister, Franco Frattini, said Sunday in a television interview.White House, State Department and Pentagon officials held talks with their European and NATO counterparts about how to proceed in imposing flight restrictions over Libya. A senior administration official said Sunday that no decision had been made, and expressed caution that any decision on a no-fly zone would have to be made in consultations with allies.

A diplomat at the United Nations said that any such action would require further debate among the 15 nations of the Security Council, which was unlikely to act unless there was a significant increase in state-sponsored violence in Libya, including the use of aircraft against civilians.

6:48am We're getting reports that the country's second most important military airport, not far from Benghazi, has fallen to the protesters.

Private jets and civilian aircraft at the Al Banin airport were seen grounded. Military personnel say they have joined the people's revolution.

If true, the takeover would mark another blow to Gaddafi's regime.

That was from early this morning, and has come from several sources, but so far nothing from libyafeb17 or the wire services.

A number of residents in the Libyan bordering town of Ghdames arrested a car loaded with huge amounts of jewels on its way to Algeria, Echorouk has learnt.

The car is a Toyota land cruiser. It carried four masked men. They were on their way to the Algerian borders through the crossing point of Dabdab in the province of Illizi (south of Algiers), sources said.

They admitted that they belong to the militias of Libyan leader Gaddafi’s son Khamis. Three of them come from Libya and another one from Sudan. They planned to smuggle more than $5 million-jewels. The car contained many pieces of light arms.

Libyan soldiers and policemen continue coming to Algeria. They say they had to leave their places and come to the country because they refused to obey orders to shoot protesters.

According to them, officers who obey those orders get bonuses and promotion. Those who do not implement the instructions will be jailed and introduced to military justice for civil disobedience.

Official sources say the number of Libyan soldiers and policemen who are in the crossing point is estimated at more than 100.

ALGIERS, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Opponents of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi have held off an attack by pro-government forces near the town of Misrata and shot down a military aircraft, a witness told Reuters on Monday.

Misrata is 200 km (125 miles) east of the Libyan capital. "An aircraft was shot down this morning while it was firing on the local radio station. Protesters captured its crew," said the witness, Mohamed.

"Fighting to control the military air base (near Misrata) started last night and is still going on. Gaddafi's forces control only a small part of the base. Protesters control a large part of this base where there is ammunition."

12:56pm France has announced it is sending two planes with humanitarian aid to the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi.

Francois Fillon, the French prime minister, said the planes would leave "in a few hours" for Benghazi with doctors, nurses, medicines and medical equipment.

"It will be the beginning of a massive operation of humanitarian support for the populations of liberated territories," he told RTL radio.

12:06pm The Associated Press news agency reports residents of the Libyan capital say prices for basic foods are skyrocketing, and long lines are forming at bakeries for rationed bread.

One resident tells AP that the price of rice, a main staple, has gone up 500 per cent, reaching the equivalent of $40 for a five kilogram bag.
