CIA's top Libyan contact Musa Kusa may go down with Gaddafi
By Jeff Stein

...

Foreign Minister Musa Kusa, who plotted assassinations and airline bombings as well as helped Washington pursue al-Qaeda terrorists, cannot defect to the opposition like other top Libyan officials, says a spokesman for a U.S.-based Libyan human rights group, because “he has too much blood on his hands.”

...

Kusa was Gaddafi’s chief of intelligence from 1994 to 2009, when he was appointed foreign minister. But long before then Libyan exiles had dubbed him “the envoy of death” for sending hit men around the globe to eliminate opposition figures.

...

Khattaly also charges Kusa with directing the assassination or kidnapping (and later execution) of at least five prominent Libyan opposition figures abroad, including Mansur Kikhia, a former foreign minister and United Nations ambassador who was abducted from Cairo in 1993 and never seen again.

...

After the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Gaddafi offered Washington intelligence on al-Qaeda’s effort to obtain a nuclear weapon, and it was Kusa who met with Ben Bonk, deputy chief of the CIA’s Counterterrorist Center, according to later reports.

“He will not be part of any democratic government in the future, that’s a sure thing,” said Omar Khattaly, spokesman for the Libyan Working Group, which has offices in Atlanta, the United Kingdom, Belgium and the Netherlands.

“There’s a lot of stuff in Libyan intelligence files that will make him make him look bad” to the opposition, added Vince Cannistraro, a former top CIA official who led the agency’s probe of the 1988 bombing of PanAm 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.

Inside Gaddafi's inner circle
A look at the people Muammar Gaddafi relies on to entrench his rule and to remain in power in Libya.
Last Modified: 27 Feb 2011 23:36 GMT

Saif Gaddafi is the mouthpiece of his father's administration - and now targeted by UN sanctions

Dr Abdulqader Mohammed al-Baghdadi
Secretary of the General People's Committee (Prime Minister) since 2006. The 59-year-old chairs the oil and gas council and the Libya Investment Authority, one of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds and reportedly the holding company which manages Gaddafi's wealth. He is also a member of revolutionary committees and is involved in past violence. He is one of the 16 senior administration figures slapped with a travel ban by the United Nations Security Council.

Mousa Kousa
Minister of Foreign Affairs. He is a former head of external intelligence and negotiated Libya’s normalisation pact with the US and European powers.

Colonel Abdullah al-Senussi
Right hand man and brother-in-law to the Libyan leader - and director of Military Intelligence. The 61-year-old's past history includes a suspected involvement in the Abu Selim prison massacre. He was convicted in absentia for the 1989 bombing of UTA flight 772, in which 170 people died. He was also included in the UN's travel ban.

Abdulqader Yusef Dibri
Head of Muammar Gaddafi's personal security and responsible for the regime's security. Yusef, 65, has a history of directing violence against dissidents. Also banned from leaving Libya by the UN Security Council.

Preliminary Black List of Qaddafi's Financial Aides Outside Libya - Middle East Transparent Metransparent

Preliminary Black List of Qaddafi’s Financial Aides Outside Libya Saturday 26 February 2011 Metransparent

Exclusive: 1- Metransparent sources reconfirmed that Algerian authorities had sent 3 military transport planes to Libya to be used by Qaddafi for bringing in mercenaries from African countries. This, notwithstanding Algerian official denial.

2- However, sources confirmed that UAE’s minister of foreign affairs had promised Saiful Islam Qaddafi two planes from the UAE but did not follow up on his promise. Metransparent information published yesterday should be corrected accordingly.

3- Muammar Qaddafi called Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz. He requested that the Saudi satellite channel " al-Arabiya " take a positive attitude towards his regime. Our sources said " Al-Arabiya " has received official instructions to take a more pro-Qaddafi line "but not too ostentationlly". Saiful Islam Qaddafi was interviewed by al-Arabiya today saturday (Video and text on al-Arabiya).

4- The following is a Preliminary Black List (to be completed very shortly) of Libyan personalities who represent the financial striking arm of Qaddafi’s regime. Some of the following names are Libyan officials and sons of Libyan officials. We are publishing the names with a view of the coming International Sanctions against the Qaddafi regime. The following names represent about 31 billion US dollars, much of which is in Dubai banks:
    1- Mustafa Zarti, Austrian passport
    2- Mohamed Ismael
3- Waleed al-Jahmi (Italian and Libyan passports)
    4- Ali Ibrahim Dubaiba
    5- Ibrahim Ali Dubaiba
    6- Ussama Ali Dubaiba
    7- Abdul Hamid Ali Dubaiba
    8- Ahmed Qaddaf ad-Dam
    9- Abdullah Mansour
10- Farhat bin Qadara (Governor of Central Bank of Libya)
11- Ihmeed Abdul Salam Abdul Hadi, cousin of Muammar Qaddafi: his fortune of aroud 1,2 billion dollars in in Dubai banks.
12- Muhamed Abdullah Sanoussi (son of Abdullah Sanoussi, took part in firing at Benghazi protestors, thought to have be in London)
    13- Ammar Ltayyef
    14- Amran Abu Kraa
    15- Abdul Rahman Karfakh

Forces preparing to march on Tripoli
Posted on February 27, 2011 by S050

SEVERAL towns in western Libya have been taken by opposition forces, which are now preparing to march on the capital, a member of a revolutionary committee said in the town of Nalut.

An AFP reporter arriving in Nalut, a town of 66,000 people, 235km west of Tripoli, found that strongman Muammar Gaddafi’s loyalist security forces had entirely disappeared from the streets.

...

“The towns of Rhibat, Kabaw, Jado, Rogban, Zentan, Yefren, Kekla, Gherien and Hawamed have also been free for days. In all these towns, Gaddafi’s forces have gone and a revolutionary committee put in place,” he said.

“We have placed ourselves under the authority of the interim government in Benghazi,” he explained, referring to the opposition shadow regime formed by former justice minister Mustafa Abdel Jalil in the east of the country.

38. CNN US. This is him
Ben Wedeman is CNN’s senior international correspondent based in Cairo, Egypt, named to that position in the summer of 2009.

Prior to that posting, he served as a correspondent in CNN’s Jerusalem bureau, covering the peace process, the battles between Fatah and Hamas, politics and society in Israel and the Palestinian territories. Wedeman was the first reporter to break the news of the release of kidnapped BBC journalist Alan Johnston in Gaza in July 2007. He was also the first Western reporter to enter Gaza from Egypt during Israel’s late 2008-early 2009 offensive.

...

Wedeman was CNN’s bureau chief in Cairo from 1998 to 2006. There, he closely followed the so-called "Arab spring," during which human rights and political activists frequently clashed with Egyptian security forces in their quest for democracy.

...

He was the first journalist in to Baghdad and the last one out when it came to CNN’s renowned coverage of Iraq. During that time he covered a bruising succession of crises between Iraq and the United Nations over weapons inspections. Along the way he focused on the plight of ordinary Iraqis under the draconian system of sanctions imposed by the UN where he distinguished himself for his in-depth coverage of the impact of those sanctions. He was also the only western journalist to obtain an exclusive interview with Udai Saddam Hussein, the notorious son of the Iraqi dictator.

Wedeman’s reporting has been recognised with an Emmy and an Edward R. Murrow award for his coverage of the brutal civil war in Sierra Leone.

45. Interesting--I hope you're right
I can't blame him for staying in Benghazi so long, though. Trying to move, he'd have a target on his back AND on his front for being an illegal border-crossing journalist.

The reporters who were able to report from Tripoli and Wazira were those who were allowed in officially--and accompanied by the regime's 'minders.' But a couple of them lost their minders and got some good reports in, including interviews with residents of Tripoli who were able to speak freely without the intimidation of the minders.

Funny, too, when the minders took the journos to Wazira and dropped them off at a demo that the minders thought was pro-Gadaffi, and it turned out to be anti-Gaddafi (about 2,000 people, they reported). Then the reporters were taken to a couple of pro-Gaddafi demos that they reported were very small, nothing like the size of the liberation demo. Gaddafi must have been PISSED to hear that!

RIP, minders. :evilfrown:

No need to reply, Catherina--you have better work to do. :toast:

33. U.S. and Allies Weigh Libya No-Fly Zone
WASHINGTON — Obama administration officials held talks on Sunday with European and other allied governments as they readied plans for the possible imposition of a no-fly zone over Libya to prevent further killings of civilians by forces loyal to Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi. Further increasing international pressure on Colonel Qaddafi, the Libyan leader, Italy suspended a 2008 treaty with Libya that includes a nonaggression clause, a move that could allow it to take part in future peacekeeping operations in Libya or enable the use of its military bases in any possible intervention.

“We signed the friendship treaty with a state, but when the counterpart no longer exists — in this case the Libyan state — the treaty cannot be applied,” Italy’s foreign minister, Franco Frattini, said Sunday in a television interview.White House, State Department and Pentagon officials held talks with their European and NATO counterparts about how to proceed in imposing flight restrictions over Libya. A senior administration official said Sunday that no decision had been made, and expressed caution that any decision on a no-fly zone would have to be made in consultations with allies.

A diplomat at the United Nations said that any such action would require further debate among the 15 nations of the Security Council, which was unlikely to act unless there was a significant increase in state-sponsored violence in Libya, including the use of aircraft against civilians.

Saif: My brothers, my brothers, I want to tell you something I want to tell you something. Wait my brothers. Please, listen. The people, they’re saying rumours, they’re saying that the police have ran away, that the police have joined the hooligans. Today we show them that the police are with Libya.
Crowd: God is greater!
Guys calm down!
Saif: Alright, let me tell you something
Crowd: We want weapons, we need weapons!
Saif: Listen, just listen. Reinforcements are coming to you. We’ll be bringing you means, weapons, our situation is good, we are victorious…
Crowd chant: God, Mu’ammar (Gaddafi) and Libya!
More chanting: Despicable Al Jazeera! Our leader, we want no one else!
Saif: Guys! My brothers. Today, we are NOT inviting you to rice and meat…
Crowd: This is our country! God is greater!

Saif: I am now going to go, but I will send you all the means you require. But your country, don’t leave it to those reckless guys. Those who you will meet and face you, we’ve seen them, they’re nothing..
Crowd: Reckless guys, the ones who take the pills…
Saif: Listen my brothers, today, today, you are Tripoli.
Crowd chant: With our souls, with our blood, we sacrifice ourselves to you our leader!
Saif: Listen, I’m going now, but today, I will send you the support. And tonight, I want………..
Crowd go insane: God, Mu’ammar and Libya!
Crowd: Keep on challening! Our only leader!

59. Regime airport falls to protesters
Edited on Mon Feb-28-11 01:14 AM by pinboy3niner
From AJE Live Blog - Libya Feb 28:

(All times are local in Libya GMT+2) ( <My note: U.S. EST +7, PST +10> )

6:48am We're getting reports that the country's second most important military airport, not far from Benghazi, has fallen to the protesters.

Private jets and civilian aircraft at the Al Banin airport were seen grounded. Military personnel say they have joined the people's revolution.

If true, the takeover would mark another blow to Gaddafi's regime.

72. Ghadames is under control opposition:
A number of residents in the Libyan bordering town of Ghdames arrested a car loaded with huge amounts of jewels on its way to Algeria, Echorouk has learnt.

The car is a Toyota land cruiser. It carried four masked men. They were on their way to the Algerian borders through the crossing point of Dabdab in the province of Illizi (south of Algiers), sources said.

They admitted that they belong to the militias of Libyan leader Gaddafi’s son Khamis. Three of them come from Libya and another one from Sudan. They planned to smuggle more than $5 million-jewels. The car contained many pieces of light arms.

Libyan soldiers and policemen continue coming to Algeria. They say they had to leave their places and come to the country because they refused to obey orders to shoot protesters.

According to them, officers who obey those orders get bonuses and promotion. Those who do not implement the instructions will be jailed and introduced to military justice for civil disobedience.

Official sources say the number of Libyan soldiers and policemen who are in the crossing point is estimated at more than 100.
