The Oscars and the UNION
Tonights Academy Awards were written by members of the Writers Guild of America.

Every tune was played by members of the American Federation of Musicians.

The nominees and award winners are members of the Screen Actor's Guild.

And the wonderful kids in the PS 22 Chorus are directed by a member of the American Federation of Teachers.

(Please add to this list if I left any out.)

4. the kids were great, but deserved better sound intervention...
There should have been at least some microphones or other interventional help with the acoustics. Granted, I was watching on a shitty little tv, but it certainly seemed that way to me.

5. I agree
I was also livid that they weren't on till the very end. I feel so sorry for their classmates back in NY waiting to see them. Poor kids didn't see them till almost midnight in NY.

19. They do an amazing job!
One of the most fun parts of seeing the show live is watching them hustle those set changes during the breaks. Wow! Great design and implementation and no room for error.

9. Ironic that the Oscars were started as an attempt to halt further formation of Hollywood unions
Edited on Mon Feb-28-11 12:06 AM by RufusTFirefly
You can look it up.

Film Reference

It was a rather cynical ploy. A sort of "company union."

Luckily -- I might add -- it failed for the most part.

14. Thanks, that was interesting, I didn't know about it.

Makes sense (that they would want to do that) since in those days actors and directors were under contract with studios so the studio really dictated what they could and could not do and I'm sure they wanted to keep it that way.

17. You're welcome

It's interesting that a ceremony known primarily for its glitter and gowns and overlong speeches is not nearly as banal and benign as it seems.

The same Louis B. Mayer played a major role in defeating Upton Sinclair's California gubernatorial bid, employing the full power of Hollywood as a potent pro-business, anti-labor propaganda tool.

I highly recommend Greg Mitchell's Campaign of the Century: Upton Sinclair's Race for Governor of California and the Birth of Media Politics

16. Being a con can be terribly confusing mentally.
What they meant to say was, "Overpaid, conservative talk-radio buffoons."
