Politics at the Oscars - Union Support

February 27, 2011 10:12 PM

ABC News' Chris Marderosian reports:

At the Academy Awards tonight, best cinematography winner Wally Pfister made a point during his acceptance speech of thanking his union crew on “Inception.”

- snip -

“I think that what is going on in Wisconsin is kind of madness right now,” Pfister says. “I have been a union member for 30 years and what the union has given to me is security for my family. They have given me health care in a country that doesn’t provide health care and I think unions are a very important part of the middle class in America all we are trying to do is get a decent wage and have medical care.”

8. I wish I could have been part of a Union.....
The last time I was fired, the manager said: "I hate to do this because you did such a good job." Now if I had had a Union behind me, I wouldn't have been fired.

What does it say about this country that a living wage and basic healthcare are radical ideas?

11. Completely ignored in the Oscar write up in the Wisconsin State Urinal today
Edited on Mon Feb-28-11 11:55 AM by AllyCat
They mentioned nearly every little award and someone dropping the F-bomb at least 3 times, but NO MENTION of Pfister's speech. Or Ferguson's (is that the right name...Inside Job guy?)

25. You're right. Ferguson's speech definitely deserved some attention too.
"Inside Job" director Charles Ferguson subjected Wall Street players, economists and bureaucrats to a fierce cross-examination to depict the economic crisis as a colossal crime perpetrated on the working-class masses by a greedy few.

His film examined the financial crisis of 2008. His speech lamented the lack of accountability three years later.

"Forgive me, I must start by pointing out that three years after our horrific financial crisis caused by financial fraud, not a single financial executive has gone to jail, and that's wrong," Ferguson said.

It's no wonder the M$M ignored that. Ferguson is absolutely right. Every single one of those bastards should be behind bars for life but instead, they get record bonuses. What a country.

16. This is what I get for missing the Oscars...
...I miss a great speech like this. I have to live without cable for a while, and my digital antenna will pick up almost every station EXCEPT the ABC affiliate that broadcast the Oscars last night.

So I went hunting for ghost towns yesterday instead. Not a bad tradeoff - I hear there weren't too many surprises, other than Trent Reznor winning an Oscar and Melissa Leo dodging a PR bullet.
