Giffords’ Houston rabbi shares insight on congresswoman’s progress

HOUSTON -- For Gabrielle Giffords, home is now in Houston, which is more than a thousand miles from Tucson, but faith is never far, it’s always in her heart, said a Houston rabbi.

Lyon, who is a longtime friend of the Jewish congresswoman’s Rabbi Stephanie Aaron, in Tucson, meets with Giffords about three days a week at The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research in the Texas Medical Center.

“Gabby likes to reach out and hold my hand and she listens carefully and smiles easily. Prayer for her is meaningful,” said Lyon. “Gabby is a sweet, spirited person who doesn’t give up and truly wants to make a difference. Currently, it’s to make a difference in her own life, but ultimately to continue making a difference in the lives of others in which she was elected to serve.”

“A little wristband that many people like to wear for a lot of different causes. It’s an orange wristband and it says in English letters, but it’s a Hebrew phrase. It says ‘Gam Zeh Ya’avor,’ and it means ‘this too shall pass.’ And it means not only will all of this pass, but there are joyful moments that pass into less joyful moments, but even those less joyful moments will pass into more joyful times in the future,” said the rabbi.

1. I'm glad she is doing better
But this sets off alarm bells for me, "For Gabrielle Giffords, home is now in Houston..." I wonder how long it will take some asshole in Arizona to use that as an excuse to attempt to remove her from her seat in Congress?

3. If that DOESN'T work, they probably already have attack ads in the can for '12

"do you REALLY want a congresswoman who not only has BRAIN DAMAGE(which she CLAIMS is from a shooting) but lives in ANOTHER state? and who hasn't shown up for work in the Congress in MONTHS?...Arizona can't afford 'Texas Gabby' Giffords".

:puke:

(you KNOW they're thinkin' it...)

4. I don't think that her or Mark are just yet worried about a political campaign
Either your post is in poor taste, or I am just not reading into it what I should be.

It has been a long day and I have no wish to pick a fight. But, I do believe that we are allowed just a little more sensitivity regarding this issue.

5. Of course the congresswoman and her husband aren't thinking of a campaign yet

I was speaking to the ugliness of the other side...and trying to demonstrate the depths THEY are capable of sinking to. That's all I meant.

The intent was NOT to suggest that such an ad would actually be appropriate...but rather to look ahead at what kind of moral sewage the opposition is likely to produce in response to this. Has this clarified things?

I do apologize if I sounded like I was belittling the Congresswoman OR her suffering. That was the OPPOSITE of what I was trying to do.

And I'm glad the Congresswoman continues to improve. May she recover fully.

6. Thank you for the nice post
And I just wanted clarity.

It really was nice.

I didn't mean to be snappy. Gabby will serve Arizona and the Nation again. And soon.

7. What makes me sad is that she will probably never fully recover.
All the stories of her progress are uplifting. But we have to face the cold reality of the situation. She may never again possess complete mental and physical faculties. Having a normal life will be a challenge enough. I think being a public servant is most likely out of the question.

It just makes me feel sick to my stomach.

8. Let's hope for the best.
And send her staff a letter of support.

11. Don't give up hope.
My brother-in-law suffered a gunshot to the left side of his head 34 years ago and the only way one can tell it is by his right-side paralysis. His mind, memory, speech, etc. is the same as it was prior to the injury and he is a productive member of society. There are positive outcomes to this type of injury.
