Kadhafi recruiting hundreds of Tuareg fighters: Mali

BAMAKO (AFP) – Hundreds of young Tuareg from Mali and Niger, including former rebels, are being recruited by embattled Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi to fight off a popular uprising, officials in northern Mali said.

Cecilia Malmström, the Commissioner responsible for EU policy on refugees, signed an agreement last year with Libya’s dictator Muammar Kadaffi where the country would receive 50 million per year for three years – in exchange for more effective border control. In order to reduce immigration to Europe the EU is ready to compromise on human rights and cooperate with dictators.

Libya, like many other North African countries, is a transit country where an estimated half a million refugees are waiting to get on to Europe. But to maintain the walls of Fortress Europe, the EU is working with the dictators of North Africa in order to reduce the number of refugees attempting to cross the Mediterranean.

The EU asylum policy costs lives. Every year about 2,000 people who are trying to flee from oppression and poverty drown in the Mediterranean. The common asylum policy that has evolved within the European Union violates the human rights. The Geneva Convention states the human right to seek asylum in another country and to get a just examination of ones asylum application. The right of asylum was, as well as many other human rights, adopted after World War II.

I want to see a much more generous and humanitarian refugee policy. I want to see a Europe that lives up to the Refugee Convention and takes responsibility for the unjust world order by offering a safe haven to more people in our part of the world.
