The continuing saga of Cablevision rate increases, or how I cut the cable
Edited on Wed Dec-22-10 02:18 PM by DainBramaged
Eariler today my head exploded when I found out Cablevision increased my bill yet again;

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x54917

Of the $141.03 I pay every month, only $44.95 is for Internet service (up to 15 MB a second download speed they claim). So for 'Family' cable which includes the few channels I watch, SyFy (premium) MSNBC (premium) Speed (premium) History (premium) and Discovery (non-premium) I pay $96.12 a month for two boxes and remotes (because I need them to receive the 'premium' channels) no movie channels and no channels over 100.

This afternoon, I said FUCK YOU to Cablevision. I am keeping my Internet (goes up to $49.95 a month) and on January 8th Dish Network is being installed. One receiver for both TV's, DVR for free for 6 months, HBO and Cinemax for free for 3 months, NO installation fee, MORE channels than I get from Cablevision, all for $39.99 a month for 12 months, increasing to $54.99 after that (plus tax).

I gave cablevision one last chance, and they wouldn't budge, so fuck you Cablevision. We're done. I will be saving $51 a month and getting MORE for my money.

25 years with them didn't mean shit. Oh well. They lost not me.

1. I'm right behind you. (Time Warner)

Just raised rates - $125 for high-speed internet and basic cable. What a joke.

Going to look at DirectTV after 1/1/11. Sounds like a better deal.

2. I have to keep the Dish for 2 years. I'm OK with $55 a month next year
it is still under $100 a month for both cable Internet and satellite TV.

3. I don't do TV. I've got the DSL bundled in with my land line service and have a sweet deal.

4. I almost dropped them
when I returned home from KY in November. However Dish and DirectTV wanted a 2 year contract (I'm on the road for months at a time and can't do that).

I wish some free market competition would come and compete with Cablevision.

5. I went 25 years with Cablevision no contract
2 years with Dish is worth it. And if I move, $50 installation at my new address. I'll take it. I am sick of Cablevision dictating to me what I can and can't watch and for more than I'm willing to pay.

7. I have roughly the same package you do, pay around $155 monthly
(going up next month), and have been giving serious thought to making the same move you have! Keep us posted with your thoughts on the switch.

8. It's like when I quit smoking 5 years ago
I finally said, it's done. And what's even worse, when I called Cablevision before to TELL THEM I want the service shut off Jan 9th and WHY, they didn't flinch. The girl was like, well, thank you for calling Cablevision.........

Some day they will figure it out. In two years, I hope, FIOS comes through. And then I'll try Direct TV, and maybe by then Cablevision will have gotten the message.
