..DEMOCRATS don't stand in the way of a train wreck...just give them the rope they need to hang themselves...
This unconstitutional attack on "Brown People" will come back to embarrass the sponsors, those who vote for it and the Republicans. I should note, however, that there are Republican business leaders who are frightened by this.
Once passed, this legislation will soon backfire. The first time the spouse or child of a BBVA officer, for example, is pulled over, harassed, propositioned, ticketed and jailed unfairly...we will see all of them running for cover. Because it is unconstitutionally broad and in violation of the Due Process Clause of the U.S. Constitution, improper arrests will subject, not only the Law Enforcement Officer, but also the chain of command to individual, personal liability as well as the city, county and state.
This isn't a maybe...it is certain to happen. As a former Attorney General who worked closely with Law Enforcement at all levels, I can tell you this IS NOT what Law Enforcement wants. They know it spells trouble for them and the communities they represent. If the promoters of this legislation really wanted to stop undocumented workers they would do what Dale Peterson suggests: penalize the businesses that hire them, not launch a massive unconstitutional hunt for undocumented workers and their wives and children.
This unfortunate legislation is sure to give Alabama the headlines we cannot afford. Companies like, Honda, Mercedes, Toyota, and Hyundai that I brought to Alabama, as well as other companies owned by foreign nationals, will not like what this forebodes. The Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Officers, EDPA and others will not be able to counteract the negative effects. This legislation will be today's equivalent of Bull Connor, fire hoses and water cannon...Major companies will steer away and some like BBVA may end up leaving and taking thousands of jobs with them to states like North Carolina which have a more reasoned approach.
SO, my word of advice to Democrats is to step out of the way after you've done everything humanly possible to change, correct or perfect this terrible piece of legislation. Step away and hold your ears for there will be a loud explosion of bad publicity for Alabama and those who support this legislation.
Just stay the course, do the right thing and benefits will flow to you for your level headiness.
Sincerely,
P.S. This month marks the 12th year in which Karl Rove's client started his investigation of me. April will be the ten year anniversary of when Karl Rove's best friend's wife, the USA for the Middle District started the federal probe...while her husband ran my Republican opponent's camapign against me.
Thanks so much to those of you who've contributed to my legal defense. The legal bills continue to mount, so if you can, <**make a contribution **>
Whatever you can give will make a difference in my fight for justice. Thank you!
