9. Hey, superpower's gotta spy, right? :)
I hope we're passing intel to the Free Libya fighters.

Reports of Tripoli gunfire may not be anything; the real news is airstrikes on oppo forces approaching Sirte; have to watch Ras Lanuf, too. They have gunships flying overhead.

You deserve your rest--glad you finally had a chance for it. I have a feeling you're gonna need it.

Love & Peace,

7. Reuters: Gaddafi forces hit rebels east of Sirte
Edited on Sun Mar-06-11 06:02 AM by Ghost Dog
By Mohammed Abbas Mohammed Abbas

RAS LANUF, Libya (Reuters) – Forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi attacked rebels on Sunday in Bin Jawad, a town between rebel-held Ras Lanuf and Gaddaffi's home town of Sirte on which the rebels had set their sights.

One fighter, returning wounded from the frontline town, said the Gaddafi loyalists had attacked with machineguns and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs). Asked what he had seen, he replied: "Death." Distraught, he would not say any more.

...

It was not immediately clear if this was a concerted assault or a hit-and-run attack on the rebels.

The government said on Sunday it had driven the rebels, who took over eastern Libya over a week ago, all the way back to their eastern stronghold of Benghazi.

But the rebels were still clearly in control of Benghazi and the key oil complex of Ras Lanuf, which they took on Friday night. "They're all rebels here," a witness in Ras Lanuf said. A warplane struck Ras Lanuf on Sunday but no one was hurt.

/... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20110306/wl_nm/us_libya_east_13

No mention specifically of air strikes in this skirmish/battle, that I can see, in this Reuters report.

10. Recap of last few hours, Part 1
Good morning everyone, slept a lot. We have a dust storm here and it's not friendly to people with asthma, like myself.
3 hours ago Favorite Retweet Reply

Last night in one of my last tweets I said it won't be a quiet night, and also expected a decisive day today. #Libya

I was expecting a decisive day in Sirt, but it seems things have gotten much closer to #Gaddafi than even that.

Last night gunfire was reported in Sirt, rumored to be a Furjan rebellion. No confirmation about this yet.

In the wee hours of the morning, a few revolutionaries were reported to have arrived at the outskirts of Sirt. Again no confirmation.

Around the same time, we heard doubts about the story that Bani Walid youths are heading towards Sirt; that's still very unclear.

A few hours later the Sky News reporter in Azawiya reported Gaddafi troops retreating from the city's perimeters...

Then, heavy and persistent gunfire was heard opposite Bab al Azizia (Gaddafi's residence) in Tripoli by residents & foreign journos.

Something big is going on, that's for sure. Still no contact from within Tripoli so no details...

However when the state TV starts airing bold, in-your-face lies, you know things are critical & desperate...

#Libya state TV, amid the heavy gunfire in Tripoli, are claiming ridiculous territorial gains for #Gaddafi...

The state TV is claiming that Gaddafi now (suddenly) controls Tobruq, Misurata, Azawiya, and is "heading towards Benghazi" #Libya

Forgot to mention the British SAS team caught by the revolutionaries last night, awaiting more details on that.

Used to this. In 1967 Israeli troops within 80 miles of Cairo; state TV said "our troops are penetrating deep into Israeli territory" #Libya

So basically as Arabs we know that the bigger and more outrageous the lies, the bigger the problem the regime finds itself in. #Libya

So how do you know the size of catastrophe an Arab tyrant is in? Look for the size of his state TV's lies as a pointer. #Libya

In fact, with this, I'm no longer in support of jamming #Libya state TV's signals. They're hanging themselves so let's give them more rope.

Oh yeah, and #Libya state TV said they're recaptured Ras Lanuf, and the gunfire heard in the capital was "celebrations & fireworks"

In fact Gaddafi should patent this wonderful invention, fireworks that work in bright daylight. Definitely CV-worthy. #Libya

Won't be surprised if #Libya state TV says that Gaddafi has now liberated Palestine, reached the moon, cured cancer, and contacted aliens.

In other words, expect the BS to hit the fan. Watching #Libya state TV over the next few days will be cathartic, even therapeutic for me.

On a more serious note, Aljazeera has contacted people in Tobruq, Benghazi, Ras Lanuf, and Misurata; confirm silence since yesterday. #Libya

I'm hearing this figure wrt number of revolutionaries heading towards Sirt: 20,000. No confirmation at this point.

About the British SAS story, I wouldn't make much of it. Could be an evacuation team, or may be offering assistance.

OK, so now send me the most ridiculous claims #Gaddafi will be airing through his state TV. Suggest a tag too.

Aljazeera's reporter says that Gaddafi's forces at Wadi-al-Ahmar are his only significant force in the Sirt region. #Libya

Wadi-al-Ahmar is 100 kms from Sirt on one side, and less than 40 kms from Bin Jawad on the other. #Libya

Aljazeera's reporter says that if the revolutionaries overcome Gaddafi's forces at Wadi-al-Ahmar, they've pretty much taken Sirt.

Time is Libyan time (+2 GMT) so about 13 minutes ago

13:12 Al Jazeera – An eyewitness has just called from Misratah and stated the following:

From around an hour, Misratah started getting attacked from the western entrance. Local urging people to stay in their homes. Some tanks have entered into the main roads of Misratah and shelling heavily. They are trying one final attempt to reclaim the city.

Tanks and 3 to 4 armoured personnel carries have entered. Analysts say these tanks cannot stay because Misratah is completely liberated. The revolutionaries will attack these tanks in any way possible.

Revolutionaries are using ammunition sparingly, but the Gaddafi forces are firing left right and center with the aim of terrorising the residents.

OCHA, UNOSAT and NetHope have been collaborating with the Volunteer Technical Community (VTC) specifically CrisisMappers, Crisis Commons, Open Street Map, and the Google Crisis Response Team over the past week.

The CrisisMappers Standby Task Force has been undertaking a mapping of social media, news reports and official situation reports from within Libya and along the borders at the request of OCHA. The Task Force is also aiding in the collection and mapping of 3W information for the response. UNOSAT is kindly hosting the Common Operational Datasets to be used during the emergency. Interaction with these groups is being coordinated by OCHA’s Information Services Section.

The public version of this map does not include personal identifiers and does not include descriptions for the reports mapped. This restriction is for security reasons. All information included on this map is derived from information that is already publicly available online (see Sources tab).

Gadhafi supporters celebrate; sources say towns still in rebel control
By the CNN Wire Staff
March 6, 2011 5:17 a.m. EST

Tripoli, Libya (CNN) -- Throngs of demonstrators supporting Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's regime celebrated in the streets of Tripoli on Sunday as the government proclaimed triumph in several cities.

But some of the cities where the government claimed it had made headway were still in opposition control, witnesses there said.

A government official said early-morning gunfire in Libya's capital were celebratory -- marking the army's victory in the city of Zawiya, near Tripoli, and its presence in the strategic oil town of Ras Lanuf. Pro-Gadhafi demonstrators said they were also celebrating the government's victory in the city of Misrata.

<snip>

On Sunday morning, Libyan state TV said the people in the Green Square were also celebrating the army gaining control of the eastern port city of Tobruk. "Morning victory, O people of Libya. Victory city of Tobruk from terrorist gangs," the station said.

However, witnesses in Ras Lanuf, Misrata and Tobruk said those towns were still under opposition control Sunday.

In the post-ideological age, Arab regimes go for image makeover
March 5, 2011Malik Al-AbdehL

Running an Arab dictatorship is not as easy as it used to be. There was a time when all you needed was to parrot something about Islamist extremism/oil contracts/immigration/peace with Israel, and Western leaders were happy to do business with you. The growing influence of the media however, has meant that dictators have to try that little bit harder.

The Guardian has uncovered the role played by global lobbying firm The Monitor Group in improving the image of the Gaddafi regime in the US. The campaign, believed to be worth $3m, focused on paying for top academic figures from leading American universities to travel to Tripoli for personal conversations with the Libyan dictator.

The revelation reflects a growing desire by Arab regimes to improve the way that they are perceived in the West. This didn’t matter very much in the past when realpolitik considerations reigned supreme. However, the end of Soviet patronage, the decline of Arab nationalist ideology in favour of democracy and human rights, and the need to attract foreign investment to keep the armies of young people in employment, has meant that regimes in the region have had to embrace the PR industry.

Happy families: The Assads are obsessed by image

Improving a regime’s image abroad is as much about maintaining control at home. A state visit to a European capital, a well-placed article in a respected newspaper, or a well-timed photo-op creates the impression that the cherished leader is “backed by the West.” This disheartens the opposition, which assumes that the dictator and the West are in cahoots. The focus, as always, is on renewing sources of legitimacy, thereby consolidating the regime’s power over it’s people.

Just to give you an idea of the propaganda there
“In Tripoli, there is no problem” – nurse from Serbia

From Serbian daily “Kurir”

TRIPOLI / Kikinda - She does not think to come back. In Tripoli she feels safe!
KIKINĐANKA Erzsébet Jovičin (51), who works for nine years as a midwife at the clinic for the national oil companies in Tripoli “11 June”, now is not thinking about returning to Serbia. With her husband, Slobodan (51) she talks each day on the phone.

She transmits the atmosphere from the Libyan capital, where, he says, everyday life does not significantly differ from the pre-crisis:
    - In Tripoli, there is no problem. The shops, though there are fewer goods than usual. On the streets I saw no violence, and normally I drive the streets and boulevards. I was more scared when in 1999. at the NATO missiles struck Kikinda than at any time during the crisis in Libya. I do not feel threatened because medical staff live in buildings that are located within the complex where the clinic is treating employees who work for the company and their relatives – says phone Erzsébet.
The clinic has about 1,000 employees. Than 700 nurses, most of the Philippines, but the patients at the service of Ukrainian, Bulgarian and a dozen nationals of Serbia.
Her husband says: If I could, I would go tomorrow to Libya
- Foreigners with secondary education in Libya, earning more than the local population with the same degree. Since I am unemployed, if someone offers me a decent job, I would without thinking because it is a rich country. Libyans are very direct and communicative, especially when talking with people from Serbia. Mostly speak French and Italian – says her husband, who is a member of Kikinda branch of Mensa and swimming judges.

62. Journalists doubt only 'celebratory gunfire' in Tripoli
Posted by AJE within last half hour:

1:32pm

Al Jazeera's Anita McNaught, reporting from Tripoli said that at the moment there is victory celebration going on, "but before dawn it was something different".

"One possible scenario is that internally in Tripoli there was a big crackdown and they have covered the story of that by talking about this celebratory shooting. This is the collective hunch of the journalists here."

Do you know what happened this morning?
