Worth another look: Chrysler Super Bowl commercial with Eminen. Detroit. It's home.
Born there, raised there, worked there. Was a teen when Motown was at its peak; turned 17 when Denny McLain won his 30th; was a stockboy at Federal's department store on Gratiot when the first moon landing happened. Mom worked at Denby High School to support us two sons alone (Dad split - around 1960). I love Detroit, and always will, with all its problems, although for work and love I have moved to DC. I never had a bad moment there, whether as a freshman at Wayne State University for the first Earth Day in 1970 or having a brewski in the Warehouse District or Greektown.

It's Home. Go screw yourself, Glenn Beck.

8. You brought back so many wonderful memories of
Detroit. I grew up Downriver, but went to Detroit for so many wonderful things like the Fox, JL Huson's, Kern's, Sanders, Tiger Stadium and Al Kaline and yes, Faygo pop. My favorite place while in college was The Dakota Inn. Do you know if it is still there? It breaks my heart to see what has happened to that once thriving city. I moved away after college graduation and now live in Maine and Florida, but the Detroit area will always be in my heart.

15. Spartan here, too. Are you old enough to remember the Ford Rotunda?
When we were young, Santa was either at Hudson's, or the Ford Rotunda in Dearborn, even though I was an East Sider. I always opted for the Ford Rotunda. http://automotivemileposts.com/autobrevity/fordrotunda.html

19. Absolutely!!!
My dad always took me to the Hudson's Christmas parade on Thanksgiving and then I would also see Santa at the Rotunda. I grew up in Lincoln Park which is just a stone's throw from Dearborn. I remember the great gifts we were given by Santa at the Rotunda. Glad to hear you are a fellow Spartan. Here in Florida, where I live, the MSU Alumni Club has "Spartans on the Square" once a month in the Town Square. Everyone is dressed in green and white. Lots of fun. I met my hubby at State when he came from Maine to play football for Duffy. I still blame him for taking me away from my home state. Of course Uncle Sam also played a part in it, too.

GReat picture of the Rotunda.

28. No, I don't remember Johnny Ginger
but I do remember Soupy Sales and Bill Kennedy. I am honored to be the first on your Buddy List. I have been on DU since 2004 and I'm really addicted to this site. Looks like we have lots in common, DU, MSU, love of Detroit, and Faygo. BTW, did you ever see the movie, "Gran Torino" with Clint Eastwood. It was filmed in Detroit and really shows what the city has become. I prefer to remember Big D the way it was when I was growing up. It was actually safe to take the bus from LP to Detroit as kids and catch it to go back home in front of the Gayity (sp??)theater. How many times did you cross the Ambassador Bridge to go to Windsor? We always went to the Elmwood Casino for dinner after the proms. It was so easy to go to Canada bac then. Now it takes forever to cross and with passports.

41. I haven't seen Gran Torino, but will. Loved to go to Windsor when I was at WSU. Except once.
I'll never forget one time going over to Windsor with my very dear friend Jim (who died young of a sudden heart attack about 15 years ago - I miss him still). Anyway, we were in his '65 Merc and went over for Chinese for lunch while students at Wayne State in about 1971 (give or take a couple years). On the way back, we were detained by the Canadians, who proceeded to rip not just the car, but the ENGINE, as well, apart! Looking for that elusive doobie, no doubt, but it wasn't there that day - we just honestly went over for lunch. Missed the rest of our classes that day, though.

Thanks for reminding me of a really good guy who I miss to this day. We had our adventures. That was merely one of them.

35. The building is the Guardian building downtown, and the doorman is real.
The building is home to the Wayne County offices. There is a gift shop inside. The building was originally known as the Union Trust building. I encourage anyone who visits MI to step inside the building and see some of the finest examples of art deco the city has to offer. It is truly a work of art, like so many buildings downtown.

The doorman, Christopher Roddy, is the actual doorman for the building. I thought that was awesome.

33. Best Bill Kennedy story ever ...

http://detroitkidshow.com/Bill_Kennedy_Theater.htm

For years, Kennedy told TV viewers the story of his big climactic scene with Ingrid Bergman. He also told writer Richard Bak, who has graciously given permission to reprint part of his interview with Kennedy.

“I burned Ingrid at the stake in Joan of Arc. She was terrific, just friendly as hell. Of course, I uttered one of the classic lines of all time in that movie. It was, “We need some more faggots over here.” This was the big climactic scene of the whole movie.

The director was Victor Fleming, a real martinet. He had directed Gone With the Wind and The Wizard of Oz. This guy was God. Anyway, I told him, “Mr. Fleming, this ‘faggots’ has a different meaning today than it had in the 13th century.’ He said, “Just go ahead and do the part or we’ll get somebody else.”

So I did it. I read the line, and when we had the preview in Pasadena the audience fell down laughing when they heard it. Only then did they cut it out of the movie.”

For those unfamiliar with the term, Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines faggot as "a bundle of sticks or twigs, bound together and used as fuel."

42. From another Detroit boy, this commercial is bullshite.
and I am the same age as you.

The only thing nice about Detroit is the suburbs, and some of the cultural institutions downtown. The massive decay and emptiness within city limits is nowhere to be seen in this commercial.

Yes, I've been in the restored Fox theater, just like Eminem. My father spent his career working for GM, and we lived in Detroit and other places around the country. He finished up at the Clark Street plant of Cadillac, where the employees had to escorted by security guards back to the parking lot in order to be safe. A family friend, also GM, was mugged in the doorway of the GM headquarters building.

The city has half the population that it had when we were kids. That's a fact. It is a one industry town, with nothing to fall back on, and to a large degree the auto companies that built Detroit also tore it down by moving auto production out of the city and abandoning the plants there.

The commercial shows the Diego Rivera murals in the Detroit Institute of Arts of the working people on the assembly lines. I used to go down there for film series in the late '70s. Even back then the neighborhood right behind it was very poor and scary.

I worked on a movie filmed at the Chrysler proving grounds, which are way out of town, by the way, out towards Ann Arbor. I worked on many industrial films for the auto companies then, actually.
