One of the things that I think probably isn't credited as much as it should be for its contribution to Obama's victory in 2008 was the far-right's obsession with something that everyone outside the far right thought was a) nonsense and b) very probabyl racist nonsense.

My guess is that Obama thought so to - I've seen so many conflicting claims and counterclaims on the subject of what documents have and haven't been released that I gave up trying to keep track of it, but my impression is there are at least some things to lay it to rest that he could have done and didn't, like letting Orly Taitz go and pore over the original certificate with a microscope.

I'm really not clear on what versions of his birth certificate did and didn't come out, but to be honest it doesn't much matter - true or not, at every possible opportunity I would recommend promoting "He didn't release version $x$ of his birth certificate! He must be hiding something!" type beliefs.

The more we can do to keep the right focussed on something that doesn't hurt, the less they'll focus on things that do.

(I also reckon left-wingers ought to be trying to help out Sarah Palin's primary campaign, but that's a subject for another post...)

1. Everyone outside the far right? Lou Dobbs wouldn't shut up about it!
And he supposedly ain't a GOPers. I agree with you, keep up the good work Teabaggers...I can hear those seats already getting filled with Dem appointees.

2. There was much more far-right obsession with the birith certificate AFTER Obama won than before
I don't think the BC issue can be credited much as a contribution to Obama's victory in 2008.
There were TONS of issues before Nov 2, 2008 and the birth certificate was a very small one.

3. I wouldn't call it an issue, but I do think it was a factor.
I think it helped distract right-wing attention from the issues.

Impeachment for Hate, and Stigma in USA
The thread shows - according to me - the sickness of mind.
