New York Times: Fox Officials "Contemplating Life Without" Beck
In a March 6 article, The New York Times' David Carr reported that Fox News officials are "contemplating life without" Glenn Beck, whose contract expires in December. Carr further reported that since last August, Beck has "lost over a third of his audience on Fox -- a greater percentage drop than other hosts at Fox."

From the Carr's article:

Mr. Beck, a conservative Jeremiah and talk-radio phenomenon, burst into television prominence in 2009 by taking the forsaken 5 p.m. slot on Fox News and turning it into a juggernaut. A conjurer of conspiracies who spotted sedition everywhere he looked, Mr. Beck struck a big chord and ended up on the cover of Time magazine and The New York Times Magazine, and held rallies all over the country that were mobbed with acolytes. He achieved unheard-of ratings, swamped the competition and at times seemed to threaten the dominion of Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity at Fox.

But a funny thing happened on the way from the revolution. Since last August, when he summoned more than 100,000 followers to the Washington mall for the "Restoring Honor" rally, Mr. Beck has lost over a third of his audience on Fox -- a greater percentage drop than other hosts at Fox. True, he fell from the great heights of the health care debate in January 2010, but there has been worrisome erosion -- more than one million viewers -- especially in the younger demographic.

He still has numbers that just about any cable news host would envy and, with about two million viewers a night, outdraws all his competition combined. But the erosion is significant enough that Fox News officials are willing to say -- anonymously, of course; they don't want to be identified as criticizing the talent -- that they are looking at the end of his contract in December and contemplating life without Mr. Beck.

1. As nice as that would be...

I'm not going to hold my breath. There's too much insanity running rampant right now and it could swing either way. If the GOP manages to incite enough of it's nutjobs with it's current effort to stamp out the rights of just about anyone who isn't an old white male we might see his numbers go back up. Crazy loves company.

On the other hand, if everyone gets their heads out of their butts and sees these fraudster republican talking heads for what they are (propaganda broadcasts), maybe we could get rid of Beck plus a few more. That would be fantastic.

12. Unfortunately, I think that's why they may pull him ...
.... get the crazy back in the closet so that the GOP can foist itself on the populace as the 'sane grownups' again, even though TEH STOOPID still makes up a majority of its beliefs/followers.

13. I don't know if pulling him will make people forget fast enough for 2012
If things go the way of acknowledging that the country has gone insane, pulling their insanity spin master now won't let most people forget by 2012. They've lost their "Sane Grownup" credibility, I think. If they pull him, I think it might be a ploy to further upset the insanity end of the party into screaming about "Liberal censorship" and drive them out in greater numbers.

9. Glen Beck belongs at the bottom of the ocean.
And remember folk, when disposing of a body in a body of water, always use chickenwire. It's the environmentally responsible thing to do. The crabs get a good feed and nothing embarrassing rises to the surface to cause awkward questions.

4. Can Beck even get to December without his head exploding???
He's getting more delusional by the minute, I don't think he'll make it to December. He'll be in a mental facility before then.

8. I want Beck to last well into 2012. The crazy shit that he will be saying
Edited on Mon Mar-07-11 09:23 AM by bluestate10
will turn off even his most ardent admirers. Fox is looking to cut itself loose from an albatross, I for one don't want it to succeed at doing that.

7. I hope that Fox keeps Beck's contract and renew it for a decade.
So that moron can lead Fox down the rabbit hole as he completes the journey of losing sanity.

10. Becks are a dime a dozen...
they can replace him with a fresh, new crazy host and boost ratings again, until that hosts act wears thin.
Then replace that host with a fresh, new crazy.

Lather rinse repeat.

Sid

14. At this point they may actually be afraid to fire him.
There are a lot of Beck viewers that only watch Beck. If Fox fires him his followers are going to completely lose their shit and their rage will be directed at Fox, and you just know Beck isn't going to go quietly. Doesn't matter if he really believes what he's saying or just doing it for the money, either way he'll turn on Fox the second he finds out his contract isn't being renewed.

All that aside, they actually need Beck. When you have someone that batshit around, it lets people think wankers like Hannity and O'Reilly are sensible and "Fair and Balanced". Pull Beck and someone else will be the craziest person on Fox News. Someone that may not exactly relish the title.
