Libya Rebels Reject Potential Gaddafi Offer To Step Down, Al Jazeera Reports

CAIRO, March 7 (Reuters) - ...

Al Jazeera said sources from the rebel interim council told its correspondent in Benghazi that the offer was rejected because it would have amounted to an "honourable" exit for Gaddafi and would offend his victims.

Al Jazeera said Gaddafi wanted guarantees of personal safety for him and his family and a pledge that they not be put on trial. It said that Gaddafi had sent former prime minister Jadallah Azzouz Talhi to meet the rebels and offer to hold a meeting of the General People's Congress to work out the details of such a deal.

The offer aimed at having Gaddafi hand over power to a committee formed by the General People's Congress, the television said.

Gaddafi's jets slow rebel advance on Sirte
Libya's rebel forces pounded by tanks, jets and troops in attempt to halt an advance that has the capital, Tripoli, in its sights

...

Libyan jets have launched multiple strikes on opposition fighters near the oil city of Ras Lanuf in a counterattack designed to halt the rebel advance on Muammar Gaddafi's hometown, Sirte.

The strikes were part of a government offensive that has thrown tanks, jets and troops into the battle to halt a rebel advance that has the capital, Tripoli, in its sights.

I'm still too mad at him to read the whole article.

This is the same Peter Beaumont who said on March 3 that strikes weren't happening. I agree with what he was getting at but he had no right to say certain things his colleagues were reporting weren't happening. Not with all the footage and pictures they took.

Libya is not helped by this prism of propaganda
Media talk of tank battles and swooping bombers is inflating an already serious situation – with dangerous consequences

...

Western journalists who stayed in their comfy Tripoli hotels have not helped. :patriot: to the brave reporters who defied orders and left Tripoli.

Gaddafi sends negotiators to Benghazi

07/03/2011
By Jamaal Al-Qasass

Cairo, Asharq Al-Awsat- Informed Libyan sources in the city of Benghazi, where the headquarters of the Interim National Council are located, which has recently put forth its candidates to administer the country in the coming period, have revealed that Colonel Muammar Gaddafi yesterday sent a negotiator on his behalf to visit the Council. (Via the negotiator), the Libyan leader declared his readiness to abandon power and leave Libya, in return for ensuring the safety of himself and his family.

The sources explained that Gaddafi's terms were as follows: The General People's Congress (Gaddafi's parliament) would convene to declare that Gaddafi had stepped down, and handed power over to the National Council. In return, Gaddafi sought assurances for his safety, that of his family, and his wealth.

In a telephone interview with Asharq al-Awsat, the sources revealed that Gaddafi demanded assistance in leaving the country, which he intends to do, and requested guarantees that he would not be pursued, either internally or abroad, or brought to face international courts.

...

The sources also revealed that Colonel Gaddafi had yesterday distributed a quantity of weapons and ammunition amongst the "Abna al-Rafaq", a group of young loyalists in Tripoli who are affiliated with leaders of the Revolutionary Committees, in a move which the sources termed part of the "Gaddafi Maneuvers". By doing so, Gaddafi is seeking to deliberately confuse matters, and spread chaos, in order to blur the picture of what is happening in Libya in front of the foreign media and observers.

Man: Two mercenaries are dead over there, did you see it? Two mercenaries.

Cameraman: We can hear some messages on their radio unit which say how they were cornered by the mercenaries armed with light rifles in front of the People’s Committee building in Misratah, in an area knows as the “Closed Market”. In this area specifically there was a large presence of mercenaries who came in this morning. And these pictures document the shelling of the telecoms HQ and the People’s hall which has been the HQ for the revolutionaries in the city of Misratah. God is Greater!
