City of Cleveland could lose millions in federal funds

CLEVELAND - Sen. Sherrod Brown, Cleveland Police Chief Michael McGrath, Mayor Frank Jackson and Director of Public Safety Martin Flask spoke out Monday against federal cuts proposed by house republicans.

If the cuts go through, Cleveland would no longer receive money from the Urban Area Securities Initiative. The Greater Cleveland area has received $49 million in UASI funds since 2003.

Those funds pay for a number of law enforcement tools including, the fusion center an agency that shares information and technology with the region, homeland security equipment and training and the Automated Fingerprint Identification System that connects Cuyahoga County with four other counties.

City officials said money from two other areas, the "COPS" and the "JAG" programs, would be cut by at least 25 percent. Those programs have meant a combined $37 million to Cleveland since 2003.
