Bernie Sanders calls for surtax on millionaires, and ending breaks for Big Oil.
It takes someone like Bernie Sanders to say the obvious. To continue
what we have been doing the past ten years is sheer insanity.

And let's call a spade a spade: Many of the present-day Republican
leadership -- both in government and in business corporations -- behave
like criminals. They are not only ripping off, but also slowly and
surely, killing off the middle-class and poor Americans. Some 50,000
Americans needlessly die every year, simply because they can't
afford to see a doctor! This is our national horror and disgrace.

Does Obama really want bi-partisanship (which is a partnership) with
such people?

9. I've read that during the FDR days, above a high level of income,
Edited on Tue Mar-08-11 05:41 PM by Cal33
the rate of taxation was 90%. It was confiscatory! How did FDR ever
manage to get it through congress? Of course, it must have been
during WWII. Patriotism was running high. It will never, ever get
through Congress today -- WWII or no WWII.

21. Wow! I never knew there was a 94% income tax bracket under FDR. I knew
that Joe Louis was in the 90% tax bracket. Even at that time
only those who received straight salaries paid their full share
of taxes. Business people got most of their pay through other
means. Even at that time they were able to avoid a big portion
of their taxes through loopholes,.

28. And in reality it wouldn't actually be painful to the filthy rich.
They have way more than they need, they really wouldn't notice the difference except maybe a missing "0" at the end of the numbers on their bank statements.

30. Physically they wouldn't be hurt at all -- just their BIG EGOS. They'll
have to learn how to deal with their egos just like the rest of us.

Taxes are only for the little people.

As is 'shared sacrifice' apparently.

23. That's because little people haven't learnt to FIGHT BACK. If 82% of the people
fought back, you can bet your bottom dollar it will make a big difference!
We can't expect good results if we simply lie back passively, can we?

5. Bernie - why not throw in a war profiteering tax
and windfall tax of 110%?

That should end the wars and oil prices plummets to its lowest level....

Hell I remember when gas was 99c in 2000.

Every time I hear about "sacrifices" it makes my blood boil.

8. This would be somewhat like a "john" living off the work of the prostitutes
who work for him. There are already too many people with the john-like
personality around. Profits, from whatever source, would only excite them
further. Things are already bad enough. Please, don't start an avalanche!!

Edited on Tue Mar-08-11 06:15 PM by LaPera
The rich receive government dollars (socialism) for doing absolutely NOTHING for it!

Voting on a democratic proposed bill, every single republican refused to cut corporations like Exxon's 3.4 billion dollars they receive in government welfare (subsidies) even though Exxon makes tens of billions of dollars in PROFITS each & every year, all while taking our tax dollars and gouging us at the pumps each and every day!

This corporate government welfare goes to hundreds of profitable corporations.

The same ones that donate to the republican party and their corporate controlling agenda!

12. These people really get away with murder, don't they? But there's nobody around
around who dares to make them pay for their crimes. So what's to
make them stop, when it's so profitable for them, and they can
get away with it?

11. Yeah, they say millionaires and that's okay. But the proposals put forth
drop way down into the middle class @ $250K.

And it doesn't make sense to raise taxes on the oil companies unless you want to pay more for gas (I don't).

14. OH lol, way to make shit up.
By the way, you're going to be paying more for gas anyway. We're running out of oil, and propping up the economy with oil subsidies is only delaying the inevitable.

TL;DR parent post is bullshit.

If not, you haven't been paying attention.

And we are not running out of oil--at least not for another 200 years or so.

you're comparing apples to Fords, and your point about oil is still bullshit.

82% of the country approves a Millionaires surtax, as in a 7th tax bracket...... and only affects 30k families, basically the top .1%

At 250k you are talking about the top 1.5%

Edited on Wed Mar-09-11 09:40 AM by Cal33
It's going to be a fight uphill all the way. Don't you agree?

Let's overwhelm our senators and congressmen with phone-calls, letters
and e-mails. Even many of those who are owned by the rich will begin to
cooperate, if we let them know that their jobs depend on their cooperation.
With 81% of the vote, we ARE the vast majority. We have the numbers.

it this time: 80% of the people are of the same opinion as Bernie - according
