It should mean "those who go to the root of the problem to seek solutions".
That definition would not be so appealing to a great many folks. I suppose the insecurities they felt while debating radicals who went to the root of the problem made them feel quite foolish at times.
So if so many are quick to call extremists "radicals" who will get to the root of the problem if genuine radical solutions are presented, yet ignored because they were deemed radical?
Are we just supposed to pretend nothing can really get accomplished except mere superficial things?
4. Because getting to the root of the problem implies fairly large changes
That's why it is often tied in with extremism. Many people don't think things are that bad and/or don't think radical solutions will actually make things better. Of course others do.
