Arizona-style immigration law to be up for debate in Wisconsin

An Arizona-style immigration law soon could be up for debate in Wisconsin, though its prospects are uncertain.

A bill requiring local police to check the immigration status of people they are arresting, similar to part of a controversial Arizona law, is moving toward introduction in the state Legislature.

State Rep. Don Pridemore, R-Hartford, is circulating legislation that would require law enforcement officers to demand proof of legal presence in the country if they are suspicious of someone they are arresting, detain those without it for up to 48 hours and turn over anyone who can’t prove they are here legally to immigration authorities.
