Something about DEPRESSION as in economic depression
Edited on Fri Mar-11-11 12:12 AM by nadinbrzezinski
Take a look at this map

Then realize that for our official rate you could double the unofficial rate.

Now, the UNITED STATES is NOT in a depression by any definition of standard economics, but... I have the sneaky we have to leave that behind and start talking of local level depressions. Look at Nevada... it's unofficial rate would place one third of the population, or very close to it, as unemployed. THAT is a depression

Here are the numbers I could find, just by looking, no handy map

Now this is important, because Republicans WANT to drive the whole country to a real depression, nationwide. Why? If you are desperate enough, one in every three people don't have a job, you will take almost anything. That is the basis of cheap labor. This is Republican (and yes neo liberal) policy. It is cheap labor. That is also the other reason they want to bust the damn unions.

So yes, we do not have a depression by any standard definition. No, we have not gotten a contraction of the GDP as the standard definition demands. ALAS I am willing to bet the State of Nevada fits that definition as in textbook. So how about we start talking of this as REGIONS?

The second graph I first found was U-3 and U-6 for 2008

1. 3RD world wages
They've been pressing for it since Reagan. If they have their way, 1/3 of the country will be rummaging through dumpsters for a living.

2. What is happening in the Midwest is an uprising
that probably will scare the living daylights out of the right once they realize (and they are dim) how organic this is.

3. I'm sure you know a lot more about these matters than I do, however, it
is my gut instinct that the right is not afraid. They'll let the organic nature burn itself out and quality of life will ratchet down a knotch or two for many, many people. They don't lie awake worrying about what is happening to the country as a whole after all...they've got theirs. Laws are obviously of no concern to them. If we strike, they'll fire us. I can see a time coming that matters will become very ugly and no longer non-violent. Recall in WI may help but I'm not even sure of that. I've never lived in such a horriblly depressing time and so many are ignorant even with all that is going on because they listen to the faux news sources and believe anything they're told. I don't know that we can forestall the ongoing damage until the next election....that's my biggest fear.
