Take a look at this map
Then realize that for our official rate you could double the unofficial rate.
Now, the UNITED STATES is NOT in a depression by any definition of standard economics, but... I have the sneaky we have to leave that behind and start talking of local level depressions. Look at Nevada... it's unofficial rate would place one third of the population, or very close to it, as unemployed. THAT is a depression
Here are the numbers I could find, just by looking, no handy map
Now this is important, because Republicans WANT to drive the whole country to a real depression, nationwide. Why? If you are desperate enough, one in every three people don't have a job, you will take almost anything. That is the basis of cheap labor. This is Republican (and yes neo liberal) policy. It is cheap labor. That is also the other reason they want to bust the damn unions.
So yes, we do not have a depression by any standard definition. No, we have not gotten a contraction of the GDP as the standard definition demands. ALAS I am willing to bet the State of Nevada fits that definition as in textbook. So how about we start talking of this as REGIONS?
The second graph I first found was U-3 and U-6 for 2008
