Michigan is under siege. Is Anybody Watching?
Right now, Gov. Snyder is pushing a bill that would give himself, Gov. Snyder and his administration, the power to declare any town or school district to be in a financial emergency. If a town was declared by the governor and his administration to be in a financial emergency they would get to put somebody in charge of that town, and they want to give that emergency manager that they just put in charge of the town the power to, “reject, modify, or terminate any contracts that the town may have entered in to, including any collective bargaining agreements.”
Rachel Maddow, 3/9/11

If this was posted before, I appologize. I searched for it and didn't find anything.

Surely the Michgan SCOTUS would declare this unconstitutional. wouldn't they?

6. Don't get me wrong, it's a bad bill
but it seems largely aimed at Detroit, which fucked up as that city's government and schools are, the people should have the option of replacing the elected officials through recall or elections.

In any event, Republicans should be careful. Someday a Democratic governor could use that law to get rid of a town, county or school board controlled by teabaggers!

to enact the legislation!

9. they already have that option, & this bill isn't about that option.
Edited on Fri Mar-11-11 01:54 AM by Hannah Bell
it's about the *state* taking over cities & towns, nullifying the will of the residents.

the state could sell off city/town property or do any damn thing they wanted.

17. This is what happens when corporate media controls public opinion.
Misinformed or ignorant people vote for republicans, republicans get into office, and they take people's rights away and increase the power of corporations and owned government.

It's what republicans do.

21. But I would be willing to BET that...........
NONE of these Republicans actually RAN on the policies that they are trying to institute.

It's becoming increasingly clear that there's only one answer: STRIKE! STRIKE! STRIKE! Bring ALL commerce to a screeching halt. As soon as these laws are signed into law SHUT IT ALL DOWN!

A lot of people, including some on DU, acted relieved that Snyder won and not someone like Hoekstra. I would've preferred Hoekstra because at least we knew where he stood. Snyder is worse because his "moderate" image may make it easier for him to accomplish the same goals as Republicans like Walker.

The MI Supreme Court is controlled by far-right conservatives so I doubt they would declare this unconstitutional.

We need to recall Snyder.
