IAEA reports no release of radiation at Japanese nuclear plants.
Edited on Sat Mar-12-11 08:53 AM by Statistical
Earlier, the International Atomic Energy Agency's Incident and Emergency Centre had said that the four nuclear power plants closest to the quake which occurred near the east coast of Honshu, Japan, had been "safely shut down".

...

NISA told the IAEA that the plant "has been shut down and no release of radiation has been detected."
Japanese authorities also reported a fire at the Onagawa nuclear power plant, but the fire "has been extinguished," the IAEA continued.

"The authorities say Oganawa, Fukushima-Daini and Tokai nuclear power plants were also shut down automatically, and no radiation release has been detected," it said.

Japanese authorities have informed the IAEA’s Incident and Emergency Centre (IEC) that officials are working to restore power to the cooling systems of the Unit 2 reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Mobile electricity supplies have arrived at the site.

Japanese officials have also reported that pressure is increasing inside the Unit 1 reactor’s containment, and the officials have decided to vent the containment to lower the pressure. The controlled release will be filtered to retain radiation within the containment.

Three reactors at the plant were operating at the time of the earthquake, and the water level in each of the reactor vessels remains above the fuel elements, according to Japanese authorities.

The IAEA’s IEC continues to liaise with the Japanese authorities, and is in full response mode to monitor the situation closely round the clock.

4. Incorrect headline.
It should read "IAEA reports that Japanese nuclear plants report no release of radiation at Japanese nuclear plants."

IAEA is just going with what they were told. There is no independent verification.

11. Where on that website is this being reported?
Like seriously, I'm not trying to be rude. I'm just trying to find the source of all these claims.

7. The Prime Minister said that there had been a small leak.
http://www.thehindu.com/news/international/article1531361.ece

It was due to the steam release over pressure fears.

8. Why do people think they are going to lie about this?
It's not like if there is a leak we aren't going to know about it. It's not something you can hide. You think the Russians wanted the world to know about Chernobyl?

12. It is the nature of the corporate entity to lie.
Their very existence is built on lying.

We have to assume they will lie until lying is no longer possible.

Are the plants owned by private corporations, or by the government? Which of the two would you expect to NOT lie?
