7. It's like a trial, and the pro-nuke folks are the prosecutors.
The anti-nukers are the defendants lawyers. They are raising reasonable doubt, and the pro-nukers must prove that their case better.

At stake is not the life of one person, but an entire region around these plants, and maybe even the whole nation.

Why shouldn't we have that high of standards?

2. Please be more specific. All I have seen people saying is that.....
Nukes are dangerous when involved in earthquakes. Please provide your proof they are not.

3. *yawn*
Wake me up in a week after this whole thing has blown over and the nuclear reactors are fully shut down with no serious release of radiation or risk to anyone near or far.

What will the sensationalist news story of the day be then? Probably back to Justin Bieber's latest movie, or hair-style, or whatever.

5. The difference in Nukes is.....
A bad accident can kill a lot of people. And impact a whole area. Not so much with Wind or Solar.

And the waste is a long term issue.

You have to plan for the worse case event. That is why Nukes are different.

10. That's true.
But a lot has changed since Chernobyl. Even in a worse case event (full reactor melt-down) they have contingencies in place to contain the disaster, just like with Three Mile Island.

I'd be more concerned about nuclear waste disposal than a modern plant actually leaking significant amounts of radiation.

19. As opposed to coal, which kills 40,000 people a year in the US during normal operation.
But nobody apparently gives a shit about those people.

22. Cars can be made clean enough to be reasonably safe. Coal cannot be, ever.
When people say "clean coal" what they really mean is minimizing the damage from coal. And no, it's not hard to prove at all. But look at the other logic for a moment: nuclear power MIGHT kill some people, at some undefined point in the future, therefore it is evil and can never be used. But coal is killing people today, right now--every 13 minutes and 20 seconds, someone dies from coal-based energy. But that's okay, because coal isn't evil.

The PR execs who the coal industry paid to feed and build up the anti-nuclear movement did a fucking brilliant job of it.

12. TMI wasn't because of an earthquake.
People are fallible, and we're playing around with something that has the potential to be incredibly dangerous if we fuck up. It is not an individual danger, but a collective danger. We did not choose to live in a nation with nuclear power, we were forced to live like this.

14. This proves that nuclear plants ARE safe. The damage wasn't that bad.
It's easy to figure out the Nuke lobby's response. They probably said the same thing after Chernobyl. Face it, they have no empathy. They don't care just as long as they get their money.

At the rate we are going, when we run out of oil, energy production will all but come to a halt.
