Think That Voting Doesn't Matter?
Edited on Sun Mar-13-11 05:47 PM by SoCalDem
Found this oldie while googling & I'm amazed at how it sort of applies to the people who sat out the Wisconsin '10 election.. Of course the Brittney et al references are a bit dated, but now we have Jersey Shore & OutRageous Housewives of ...., and a bazillion MORE schlock shows.. whodathunkit?

Think That Voting Doesn't Matter?

Something to tell your non-voting friends when they say "it doesn't matter if I vote"

Think That Voting Doesn't Matter?

This is what NOT voting gets you…

1. Lousy schools
2. Dirty air
3. Polluted water
4. Hate radio on 24/7
5. Info-tainment instead of news on TV
6. Payola for Politicians
7. Expensive medicine/medical care
8. War for the sake of oil
9. Institutionalized poverty for veterans
10. Unaffordable medical insurance
11. Low interest rates for the rich, high interest rates for everyone else
12. High food costs, but poor small farmers
13. High cable bills & internet restrictions
14. High phone bills
15. People making $400,000.00 (1%) or more getting more than 50% of tax breaks
16. Corporations taking Good jobs away from America, to avoid paying decent wages
17. An insane drug policy that mainly benefits private prisons
18. A vanishing middle class..
19. A hatred of America that is spreading around the world like a virus
20. Unemployment
21. Pension plans morphed into 401-k’s only to be stolen by greedy CEO’s
22. Laws that NEVER favor “the little guy”
23. Higher property taxes, as states lose federal funding
24. Union busting with a vengeance (low paid “wage slaves” are the ultimate goal)
25. Government spying on your every move
26. "Volunteer military" that relies too heavily on reservists & National Guard..recalling GRANDMOTHERS and if a new draft actually starts up again, watch for the "elite" to wiggle out again.
27. College kids graduating with $40,000 in debt, and starting salaries @$20,000.00 a year..

How did your absence at the polls make these things happen?? Well, while you were voting for “Mario” instead of "Emmitt" or you were stressing about whether Brittney & K-Fed would get back together, or if "Tom-Kat" would actually get married, the politicians in DC were busily stuffing money into their pockets , and passing legislation that screws YOU and favors the guys with the big bucks..

How can you stop it?? Get informed… Vote the bastards OUT.. Take back YOUR government.. Do it from the ballot box.. Newspapers, radio & tv companies are ALL OWNED by the same few rich guys who just want you to buy their stuff and shut up.. Get your news online… Read foreign newspapers.. Find out what is REALLY going on..

Quit whining about how miserable your life is, and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT !!!

1. Nobody here thinks that.
And there are no Wisconsin DUers who didn't vote, so you can't possibly imagine how sick and tired we are of hearing about this.

2. No, but I met a whole bunch...

7. Those here in WI who couldn't be bothered to vote deserve to be scolded.
What, should they be congratulated for not bothering to vote last November? I think they should feel some responsibility for what happened and not to do it again.

8. Especially when the guy driving the car said don't give them back the keys..
people bought into the enthusiasm gap that was being spewed.

9. Is there anyone reading DU who deserves to be scolded?
I know its your very favorite thing to do, since 98 percent of your posts are scolding, but maybe you should take some time to think about how much your negativity repels other people.

Is there anything postive accomplished by scolding people who come to DU? The same people who DO work on elections and DO vote in every election? I really don't think so. Its just a waste of space.

12. My posts on this subject are 100% scolding of anyone who deserves it.
Any Democrat anywhere who chose not to vote last November, particularly here in Wisconsin, deserves to be scolded and I could care less if you like it or not.

The picture you love to hate, but is oh so true:

4. Counterpoint
people who don't vote or voted once or whatever may feel they 'did it' and 'nothing' changed or were let down by the system etc.

I'd add on a personal note my sister doesn't vote but if she did she'd vote Republican so I'm not about to tell anyone who I know would vote for them to vote.

People who habitually don't vote are in all likelihood not informed, not reading the news, watching the news, aware of what is going on or interested except for casual conversation where they pick up bits of what is going on to chime in one way or the other about how they feel about it.

5. Voters in California, among the most progressive states, produced its problems. Do you mean that
non-voters could have elected conservative governors and legislatures instead of progressive liberals and things would not be so bad?

How else can anyone interpret your OP?

10. Everyone should always vote. But I am so sick of the snarky
tone, the whole 'bad lazy, tv watching whiners' routine seems sort of Republican to me. I honestly don't know many people who would see themselves in that sort of framing. The people I know and meet in life all seem to work really hard, have a lot of stress, worry, very little spare time. The lazy good for nothing shiftless person you paint, I do not know that person.
I think people who don't vote should be persuaded to do so, and most of them either A. Openly do not give a fuck or B. Have what they think are good reasons. Neither group falls into the 'busy watching TV' group, at least in their own minds.
So whatever works for you. My State and region elects Democrats and has high voter turn out.

interests, not We the People.

I see no evidence over the past six decades of voting to disagree with them.

Now I must look in the mirror and ask "Why do you vote when you know from experience Democrat and Republican candidates will continue to represent special interests including foreign and ignore voters?"

I'm so naive to believe there's that pony I asked Santa for last Christmas underneath that huge pile of shit beneath my stocking.

13. Don't blame the troops....
...for a Failure of Leadership.

Who will STAND UP and represent THIS American Majority?
Platitudes, Rhetoric, Empty Promises, and Excuses are meaningless now.

"By their WORKS you will know them,"
And by their WORKS they will be held accountable.
