Crowley 2008 - Spoke Up Against BUSH And Now Obama (He KNEW This Was Coming)
Edited on Sun Mar-13-11 06:07 PM by kpete
Safe at Home
A National Security Strategy to Protect the American Homeland, the Real Central Front

By P.J. Crowley | February 25, 2008

We have policies, including harsh interrogation techniques, detention without charge, government surveillance, and immigration that are inconsistent with our values and our long-term interest. All this in the name of something called the “war on terror.”

read it, it makes sense:
http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2008/02/safe_at_home.html

Crowley knew what was coming because he didn't back down when the reporter gave him the opportunity to make his statement off the record. He basically chose to resign.

The State Department spokesman and the Prisoner in the Brig
Posted on March 10, 2011 by philippathomas

...............And then, inevitably, one young man said he wanted to address "the elephant in the room". What did Crowley think, he asked, about Wikileaks? About the United States, in his words, "torturing a prisoner in a military brig"? Crowley didn’t stop to think. What’s being done to Bradley Manning by my colleagues at the Department of Defense "is ridiculous and counterproductive and stupid" . . .

http://philippathomas.wordpress.com/2011/03/10/the-state-department-spokesman-and-the-prisoner-in-the-brig/

Crowley did not back down from his criticism:
March 13, 2011
The unauthorized disclosure of classified information is a serious crime under U.S. law. My recent comments regarding the conditions of the pre-trial detention of Private First Class Bradley Manning were intended to highlight the broader, even strategic impact of discreet actions undertaken by national security agencies every day and their impact on our global standing and leadership. The exercise of power in today’s challenging times and relentless media environment must be prudent and consistent with our laws and values. http://www.state.gov/secretary/rm/2011/03/158240.htm

............ Torture will be used on political dissidents in this country,
that is clear now, and PFC Manning is the first, but there will be others.

http://pubrecord.org/nation/9015/isolation-the-ideal-breaking-bradley-manning/
http://thinkprogress.org/2011/03/13/crowley-manning-resignation/

............I consider him to have made a principled stand,
as he clearly sacrificed his career to protest Bradley's treatment.

4. The Obama Administration Got Caught With Their Pants Down And Are Now Acting
like little children.

It should be pretty obvious to all that are paying attention.

5. He didn't want to be complicit in crimes against humanity
Maybe it's just self-preservation or maybe it's principles. But anyone with any intelligence looking at the world today, from Latin America to Africa to the ME, seeing the people power that is demanding an end to, often U.S.-Backed, oppressive, torturing, murderous regimes, and then demanding prosecutions of those who were engaged in those crimes, no matter how many decadeds later, as in Latin America, has to fear that one day, American war criminals too, will be brought to justice.

I hope he is the first of many who may have been remaining silent about the continuation of Bush policies by this administration, who will have the courage to distance themselves from these crimes.

Changes are sweeping the globe, people are uniting globally now to end these policies that the U.S. has shamefully engaged in for decades.

The Obama administration was viewed hopefully by the Arab world, but not any more. The world is watching and P.J. Crowley was smart to get out and to leave a record of not supporting those policies.

10. Not only distance themselves

Because of my keen interest in LatAm, I am looking forward for a book by Crowley that will reveal:

Why the O. administration allowed the fascist coup against Zelaya in Honduras?

Why has Hil worked so hard to get one of two puppets elected in Haiti? (nine BILLION dollars in play?)

Who is behind and why the unrelenting attacks on Hugo, Evo, Ortega and Correa?

Why the protection of alvaro uribe when he was president, and even now?

What was Hil's obsession with the mental state of Cristina F.?

Why did Hil ask for the DNA of Lugo?

What did Hil think of Lula's expanding diplomatic/economic relations with Iran?

And hopefully much more.

17. The Wikileaks cables answer your question #3
And they do so in a fair amount of detail:

Who is behind and why the unrelenting attacks on Hugo, Evo, Ortega and Correa?

It's strange to say the least that they have received so little coverage in this country.

The main purpose in the demonizing of democratic elected leaders, and in particular Chavez, is made very clear in those cables.

They basically state that the democraticization of Latin America 'conflicts with U.S. interests and influence in the region'. Iow, the U.S. does not like democracies, and the explain why.

Democracies are opposed to Imperialism. I am amazed that what those cables reveal about THIS democracy, has not been front page news. They go so far as to bemoan the fact that Chavez' 'generosity to the poor' is causing him to be 'very popular' in the region, iow, he's 'winning hearts and minds'.

Shouldn't a Democracy like this be pursuing such a method of 'winning hearts and minds'? Instead of supporting dictators which clearly will have the opposite effect?

The question isn't who is behind the smearing of these leaders, we know the answer to that. What Americans need to ask, is WTF is going on when we condemn altruism and democracy in favor of dictatorship and oppression?

But so far, no one is asking that question even now when we have clear proof that this is what is going on.

I wouldn't count on a book from PJCrowley. He is part of the system. He just doesn't think that torturing a whistle-blowing U.S. soldier looks good in light of all the other revelations which totally expose the U.S. as an Imperialistic state with little if no interest in human rights, yet which preaches human rights to the rest of the world. He's just smarter than the rest of them. And maybe he does oppose torture as a matter of principle. I hope so.

6. The people that run the military don't change when a new politician comes to town
Unless of course the new politician has the guts to actually sack everyone and start over. Of course none of them do.

11. He got rid of 90 of them. Of course that
still left a lot.I remember someone who had served under Clinton and Bush left and wrote a book, I can't remember his name ( sucks getting old) on a TV interview about his book he said the Pentagon had played games with Clinton because they didn't respect him because he had not served. I would bet they feel the same way about Obama.

15. It's been made clear that Manning's revelations were mostly low-level intel
Nothing like this justifies the treatment Manning is getting. What other information is being kept from us? How much do we really trust the people who are holding and evaluating this information? Is Manning being treated this way because they want him to roll on Assange? I'm starting to think our whole system of governance is at odds with the values we profess to keep.

- And I hope it spurs even more to leave this unjust administration.

People of conscience need to:

Torture is torture no matter who's doing it!

We're still supposed to be living under the Rule of Law!!! Remember!?!?!?!
