Government Claims Unlimited Discretion to Look Through Your Laptop at the Border
Last May, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents searched and took Pascal Abidor's laptop and external hard drive when he was returning home to New York City from Montreal, Canada, where he attends graduate school. When his laptop and hard drive were returned to him 11 days later, Abidor discovered agents had opened numerous files, including personal photographs, a transcript of a chat with his girlfriend, copies of email correspondence, class notes, journal articles, tax returns, his graduate school transcript, and his resume.

4. That is just so damn wrong.
They try that shit with me, they'll have a fight on their hands.

No kidding.

I'd go to jail to keep them from invading my laptop.

It's illegal in my eyes.

Hands Off!

9. mine is encrypted because of HIPAA
and it will automatically inform police of its location if anyone but me tries to look at any of the files. This is a requirement of te HIPAA law. What would happen if they took it?

10. Nothin' inside but Linux.
Nothin' outside but the duct tape.

My laptops are as disposable as a cell phone on Burn Notice.

It's not for any sinister reason, it's just that I can't trust myself not to lose stuff.

I still don't see what good it is to treat everyone like they are a very stupid spy or child molester. The entire system is built to intimidate people, and intimidating people seems to be the only reason for it.

They take your laptop to show you that they can and there ain't nothing you can do about it.
